| Larad said: The reason people loved SH2 was because the story was deep and thought provoking. It rivaled the best in film and literature. The past few SH games have fallen far short of that and it seems the developers are again choosing to focus on gameplay over narrative which is quite a pity. SH should never have been western developed, now its just all about the money. |
NO the point of SH2 was to scare you, and it sure did that job. The story was a bonus, and the gameplay(unless you consider getting scared gameplay) was pretty average in terms of combat, though puzzles were excellent.

No, the story was the centerpoint. The scares were the context of a disturbing but throught provoking narrative.

Gameplaay is just the vehicle for telling peronal, thought provoking storylines in video games. Gameplay should not come before narrative, because without narrative gameplay has no context or meaning.

There are engrossing games out there that don't even have stories. I hope you're not suggesting that their lack of narrative makes them worthless?

NO atmosphere was the selling point of the game, then gameplay and story are equally average. Silent Hill may be as good as some movies story-wise, but it won't compete with the High End ones, and definately won't compete with books period. For a video game though, the story was excellent.

Gameplay does not need a meaning to be fun.

The problem with that outdated thinking is that it assumes games "must" be "fun".
Most people wouldn't describe the shindlers list as "fun" but possibly enjoyable. A game can be thought provoking and enjoyable but not fun.
