Forums - Sony - Koller: Not bringing Backwards

Well I guess that answers the question about Backward on the Slim

Do we need to stop yapping about backwards compatibility?

"It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," Koller says with an air of finality. But it's all people ever talk about!

"It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he claimed. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies."

"That won't be returning," he repeats.

Nooooooooooooooo! I cant play MGS4 and GoW3 without it!

The hunt for an older model continues i guess. Heres what i dont understand. The old 80gb models have software emulation. If the software is complete and avalible, why not add it? It shouldnt cost much/anything, right?

*Fine Print*

We want the PS2 to keep selling aswel.

Because it's Sony, literally xD

And that phrase used to be their slogan, actually, think about it, lol

Likewise Dgc.

They obviously want the PS2 to keep selling.

That's unfortunate, granted its not as big a purchase driver as some ppl make it out to be but it would add nice value if there is software already available for it...but as long as that ps2 continues to sell at profit it won't ever happen

Only the emotion chip was emulated, teh graphics chip was still in the 80GB PS3. 40 GB version had no graphics chip. Doing both via emualtion would be a major undertaking. There is no incentive for doing this at this juncture.

ah well that's a disappointment ;\

i still dont see whats the point...
some even go as far as buying an extremely expensive 60 GB model that is going to break on you atleast once.

why not just get a ps3 and buy a Ps2 (if you dont have one that is) ?

100% guaranteed that their working onPS2 backwards compatibility via pure software emulation as well as planning PS2 games to be downloadable via PSN, as this will available day 1 for the PS4, but of course it is not something they will even talk about till they are close to releasing it and such.

Now the question is will this hit the PS3 at some stage?

I reckon their is a possibility, and it'll happen when PS2 hardware sales fall of the cliff, but then again I do also think that it'll skip the PS3 and go to the PS4, this way they can proposition the PS4 as the machine that can play the whole catalogue of it's own history....so it's a 50 - 50 probability right now for me.
