Forums - Sales - Can PS3 take the Japanese holiday season?

eh we have a 30,000 yen console with FF XIII releasing in the holidays... how in the world wont it sell well

yes they have FF13, but do you have any evidence that price is the reason people aren't buying the PS3 in Japan?  Do you have any evidence that a price cut ever caused a huge swing or had a long term effect at all?  Go ahead and dig back 25 years and you won't find anything.  Price has never been the issue in Japan.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I think one thing's for sure ... if the Wii and PS3 cannot start selling much better in the long term (not just 2-3 week boosts) this year ... it's curtains for the console business in Japan.

If FF13 and NSMB Wii can't do it ... it's over. The console business will never recover there IMO barring a miracle type of new game.

Japanese devs will be forced to focus more on portables in the future.

I personally see a lot of CROW eating once Tales of Vesperia and the slim releases in Japan

Do tales games really push hardware? What are you basing that on?

In Japan, any game that does 100k or so in it's first week pretty much boosts hardware. So yeah, Tales games do boost hardware. Wait 'till Tales of Ten comes out for the Wii. Hardware will be boosted.

Wel i quess, it does push hardware.

I believe you mean Tales of Graces for the wii, they changed the name. Although It could be the name in Japan.

it's already been out on 360 for a while now.  It's gonna sell quite a few copies but I think the release on 360 really limits the console pushing power of ToV.

If this is true, I hope they sell bad. Portable Gaming is much more suited for Japanese games imo. Not only that, but it will take much less time to make the games compared to consoles which are having huge developement costs over many many years. This means more games for me, and in some ways better games. I would love for developers to target handhelds more.

It will be a close battle, IMO. Super Mario Bros Wii could go the way of Animal Crossing Wii. Bundling and releasing new colours could help the Wii.

The problem with Animal Crossing Wii is that it didn't have new content, at least in a way that customers considered new content. It was based around the new online features with voice chat and the "city." Nobody rebuys a game that looks the same in content just for new features.

NSMBW looks like new content. New levels, new powerups, Koopa Kids instead of Jr.

It still looks like a rehash visually, and it has to overcome a higher price point, so I don't see it doing 5m+, but in the long term it should beat FF13 sales by a wide margin.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

If we're talking Japan-only here, i think the install base disparity alone could keep FFXIII from outselling NSMBWii, unless the latter fizzles badly.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

To all these people on this thread stating that x game and y price cut etc. will swing it for Sony in Japan this holiday. I have a question for you. You really think Nintendo will just sit back and let Sony take over at an important time? Not one person has mentioned what a Wii price cut and/ or bundling/ new colours could do for the Wii in Japan this holiday season. I have no doubt that NIntendo will do something other than release NSMBW this holiday season to counter FFx111 and slim etc.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

i'm no final fantasy freak, but why would XIII be so huge when XII according to this site has sold 2.42 m. They are both in the same numeral series or whatever not a spinoff like the crystal chronicles games. Also considering that the PS2 had a waaaay larger install base XII only managed 2.42 million. Or am i missing something?

FFXIII demo sold 80k PS3 last April.

Yes the demo, not the real game........

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
