Xbox is doomed to third place now.

But for damage control MS should drop the X360 120GB to $249 asap, and the X360 Arcade to $179 in North America.

The European prices should quickly be dropped to €199 for the X360 120GB, and Arcade to €149, or it's sales will drop like a sack of potatoes in countries like France, Italy, Germany and Holland.

Nah, the ps3 will outsell the 360 until the next 360 pricedrop.

We've been seeing the same pattern the whole gen, it's not gonna change.

However, nothing is gonna save us from a good 6-8 months of the sony loyalists in here spamming everything as the upgrades sales numbers pump their morale ;)

What are you talking about? "until the next 360 pricedrop"? No. The PS3 will outsell the X360 starting from a couple of weeks all the way until the end of generation (xcept for a few weeks - one X360 price drop week, Black Friday week and Halo Reach release week).

In Sept MS will counter with a $50 drop to $249 for the HDD equipped X360 (whether it's called Elite or not doesn't matter) but it will not be enough globally against a $299 PS3 Slim.

Question: How is the PS3 in the 360's price range when it's still 100 dollars more than the arcade?

When Sony loyals argue about price for the last year, they always used the $199 Arcade as why the PS3 isn't selling out. Now that the PS3 knocked off $100, why are people are comparing it to the $299 Elite instead of the $199 Arcade?

arcarde + HDD 120gb and a year of live more expensive than ps3. and elite.

^^ This.

^^ Not This.

You don't have to buy a hard drive or a year of live to play games on the 360

Being in 2nd feels so much better than being in 3rd

If the Elite is going to be $300, the need to do either of these 2 things -

1) Make Live Free (probably not going to happen)

or

2) Fit them with Blu-ray drives for movie playback and add Wi-fi (more likely, esp. the second). But, recently, Toshiba has joined the Blu-ray Disc Association. It's really a matter of when, not if, for MS to follow suit - whether it causes discontent among fanboys for a few days or not. The format has done well enough and is supported broadly enough, whether or not as well as DVD did back in the day, to establish itself as the next otpical media format. If not this generation, I definitely bet the 720 will be using Blu-ray.

The 360 has the deciding apps in America - Gears and Halo. But PS3 will have FF13 and GT5 for Japan and Europe as deciding apps, respectively in the next few months. The playing field has been leveled between the three consoles now. They are almost in the same price range.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I don't think so. You are assuming folks will just stop buying the 360 altogether. The PS3 will sell a lot but do you think MS will just stand by and let this happen for a while? They are making money on the 360, unlike Sony, which is losing money in their gaming division.

I think the PS3 will outsell the 360 for a while, but without a ton of exclusive games, it will fade after everyone who wants one gets one. And don't forget - we are still in a recession and $300 is a chunk of change for a gaming console.

MS isn't worried, dude. They have an 8M console lead, making money on the 360 and LIVE and have tons of goodies (Netflix) vs. the PS3 with some AAA games, Blu Ray and free Internet access and built-in wifi.

I can't want to see the financials after this price cut - especially with the deep hole Sony has to climb out of.

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

They are marching to their own beat, or something.

PSN - hanafuda

possibly they will drop the price of the elite tp $249 and throw in some games.

Long Live SHIO!

As others have stated, they will do nothing drastic. They have long term plans and will likely stick to them. They will find, just like it was for the PS3 last year, their sales margin dropping compared to the PS3 but it will still be competitive. As the Wii vs. 360 Arcade battle has proved, its not just about the price.

Fall next year will be 360 Slim with whatever the final name for Project Natal is. Its going to be practically a relaunch of the console. That's the time frame circled on their calendar, just like this fall was for Sony and last fall for MS.

Btw, $299 is great, but I'm still poor. Too poor for that even. Economy is just bad still. Anybody with me?

This. I really think with folks facing a shaky future, they will wait until it hits $199. And really, it's about getting games you can't play on a 360. That was the PS2's bread and butter.

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

Well with Blu-Ray players now starting to dip below the $199 range, the PS3's ability to play Blu-Ray movies isn't quite as appealing as it was when it first hit the market at nearly half the going rate of stand-alone Blu-Ray players. It's still a nice extra feature, but with the 360 still starting at $100 cheaper than the PS3 slim, it becomes all about the games, and right now 360 has the edge in that department.

I expect the two systems to be literally neck and neck this holiday season, with PS3 probably getting a slight edge in world wide sales due to having a stronger presence in the Japanese and European markets.

2010 will reveal all though... will Sony regain its lost momentum this generation? Will Natal make a huge splash and put Sony on the ropes for good and give Nintendo a run for their money? And will Nintendo trot out the Wii HD and give us some games we actually WANT, or will they continue to sit back and count the green made off of their casual audience while continuing to snub the long-time Ninty fans and the "core" audience.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Even if they drop the price of the Elite to $250, it won't do nearly as much of an impact that a slim PS3 @ $300 will do, its only a $50 dif, which is rather uninpressive if ya ask me.

In conclusion...

MS's Elite will sale, and well for that matter, but the slim PS3 will leave its mark thats for certain.
