Forums - Gaming - Need Modem Advice

Hi guys,

I have a Belkin Wireless G Router which is about two years old (but I think it was pretty good back then).  My family has recently decided to upgrade from ADSL to ADSL2+ (at long effing last).  What this means is that our current ADSL modem will be incompatible, or at the very least wont be able to deliver the available speeds.

I need to know what the requirements of a decent modem are, and if anyone knows any cheap (but servicable) modems that are available in Australia?

The upshot of all this folks, is that Starcraft will FINALLY have the internet speed required to game online in high-graphics environments, so hopefully I will finally get to know you all a bit better on PSN and XBL soon.

Cheers for any advice you can give me.

Starcraft.

What's your PSN ID?

Too bad you don't own a Wii, or you could have played with your fellow Austrian, RolStoppable.

I actually do own a Wii.

But the chances of me bothering to get my head around friend codes are negligible lol.

Do you want to transition to N wireless networking? N is faster, less interference, more reliable than G.

You've got a couple of options.

1. You can buy a new modem and plug that into your wireless router.

2. Buy a new wireless router with an ADSL2+ modem built in.

As I don't know where you intend to purchase it from, I can't help you with brands etc. Linksys are pretty good, Belkin aren't too bad either and thats all I know.

Tease.

The plan I am going to be on has a maximum speed of 20 MBPS under the best of circumstance.

Can G handle that? If G can handle that then there is no point in moving to N.

I will buy from any major Australian retailer or online...

G has a theoretical maximum of 54Mbits however you can only achieve this with a strong signal. If you mean 20mbits then yea you'll be fine, if you mean 20Mbytes (8* the data) then you will be severely limited by the wireless.

Your best bet is an N or G (N is backwards compatible) ADSL 2+ router, it doesn't matter where you get it from, just make sure its a good brand. Since I don't know your router I can't be sure that it will work with another modem.

Oh right sorry.

The router is a Belkin Wireless G Router Model No. F5D7230-4
Version 6005

Ideally I would be able to purchase just a cheap but decent modem. It is going to get might expensive otherwise.

But yeah the plan is for 20MBPS. But by the time that reaches from the data center to my place, then down my home's copper wires and telephone lines, it is incredibly likely I will be looking at a real-world performance of (I hope) 8-15MBPS.
