Forums - Microsoft - "Microsoft anticipating poor sales of Halo 3: ODST?"

http://www.electronictheatre.co.uk/index.php/articles/2695-microsoft-anticipating-poor-sales-of-halo-3-odst

Microsoft are intent on making sure you don’t forget that all-important date, having sent out another message to Xbox LIVE account holders declaring the arrival of the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. Though whether this is a sign of the publisher acknowledging the tangibly lowered anticipation for the title or simply the intended next line in the marketing offensive strategy remains to be seen.

Receiving far less attention than both Halo 3 and Halo Wars have prior to and since their respective releases, Halo 3: ODST may not be the show stealing release Microsoft and developer Bungie have been hoping. Though the game will undoubtedly sell well, any chances of it being a record breaker seem decidedly slim at present, and the two companies responsible are undoubtedly aware of that.

The Halo series has been making videogame history for eight years, and with Halo 3: ODST you’ll have the chance to experience the fabled war against the Covenant as one of the bravest unsung heroes in the Halo universe - the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST).

Pre-dating the events that unfold in Halo 3, you’re dropped into the ruined city of New Mombasa under orders to get to the bottom of the Covenant’s catastrophic attack. The game includes new multiplayer modes that are sure to separate the strong from the weak, and the co-operative Firefight, a mode in which you and your friends combat wave upon wave of hostile enemies.

Halo 3: ODST will be available in both standard and limited edition releases, from 22nd September, 2009. Pre-ordering at a participating retailers will grant you a token unlocking Sgt. Johnson as a playable character in Firefight, and you’ll gain access to the Halo: Reach multi-player beta when it goes live. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated will all the latest from the Halo universe.

IMO, both bungie and Microsoft want to make big bucks on this game. So they set the price point to the same as other full retail games, and keeping marketing small this time, so in the end they make much more money.

They already have the same amount of pre-ordered copies as MW2 in the US. I can't see how it would fail...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

they will probably sell a halo bundle this xmas, with elite halo 3, halo wars and halo osdt

so it should do quite well

I already have ODST on pre-order, but if they did a Halo 3 system bundle, I would pick it up as a second system for my kids.

I thought Squilliam posted this.

They're doing a changeover in SKUs, im not sure exactly what the plan is. For a 2nd Halo title I don't think they really need to build anticipitation 6 months out from release. I suspect a short sharp advertising campaign, perhaps even to coincide with their SKU reshuffle.

The other thing is, I suspect Forza 3 is their big title for the year and will get the mega $$$ in advertising.

Tease.

lol they already have 1 million preorders in the US alone. I doubt Microsoft is worrying. The game was made for way cheaper then Halo 3 was , so anything 1 million+ is a win

Its because its not a real new release, expect them to make alot of fuss about Halo: Reach next year, but ODST was never really planned as much more than an expansion.

I cant imagine sales for it to be that low. 1 million pre orders sounds like decent anticipation to me
