Forums - Nintendo - Pachter: Core Wii audience only want Nintendo games

I think you guys are missing a key bit of information. He's an analyst making suggestions for investors and publishers... When an analyst says "Wii Owners" or "Core Wii Owners" he doesn't mean every single owner, he's talking about trends for investors to make decisions. And he's right from that point of view. Most third parties games that are announced or released aren't going to drive up the price of a stock or significantly increase profit of a publicly traded company.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I don't know why everyone's saying he's talking bull, what he says does make some sense in terms of the overall trends. He basically said that most core Wii owners mainly buy Nintendo games, which looking at the sales of 1st party vs 3rd party seems about right.

He also compared 3rd-party games on the Wii to 3rd-party offering on the HD consoles and said that 3rd-party offerings on the Wii aren't as good as on the HD consoles (possibly because they don't seem to put any effort into the Wii versions), which is also true if we look at the top sales of the AAA titles.

He's right, I only want Nintendo games.

But the real question is, why don't I want 3rd party core games?

because they all suck.

Professory Layton rocks due to nice advertising. Companies should just get their asses off their chairs and make their games be successful.

I love Pachter, he's so smart, his intellect > everything.

Your Wii collection that almost has an even 50/50 split says otherwise. 11 Nintendo published titles. 10 third party published titles.

The problem isn't that they are third party. The problem is that they are VERY niche. The games that go to the HD consoles are much more mainstream. Do you think the conduit, no more heroes, and Madworld would do much better on the 360, PS3, or both? What about Little King Story? How about you tell me some high selling 3rd party series that went to Wii, but didn't sell well? Yeah there may be a double standard, but that is on every platform. On 360 there are people who would do this for a bungie game, on PS3 for any sony first or second party developer, on PC any blizzard game. The only platform where there is even somewhat of an equal stance is PSP, and that is only because when you look at high selling games there you don't look at developers(since sony has been barely supporting it) you look at large series(i.e Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto.) So again, I ask what game is high budget enough to be pulling off the sales you speak of? What game would have done better on the PS3, 360, or both?

Monster Hunter 3 looks to change that, along with some other upcoming games.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I would argue there are more niche games in the 360 than you give it credit for.

Lost Odyssey

Eternal Sonata

Blue Dragon

Enchanted Arms

Infinite Undiscovery

The Last Remnant

Star Ocean 4

Tales of Vesperia

Phantasy Star: Universe

Katamari

Magna Carta 2

Battle Fantasia

King of Fighters XII

Guilty Gear 2

Operation Darkness

Zoids Assault

Spectral Force 3

Overlord

Overlord 2

Raiden Ace Fighters

Raiden IV

Viva Pinata

Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

So that's it then? Every unsuccessful third party title on the Wii is just very, very niche? You don't think that it could simply be that because the Wii has such a wide demographic breakdown that it simply doesn't have as many customers to support these titles as the other two consoles do? Nintendo, by general good word of mouth and legacy franchises gets to side step this problem and create a seperate "core fanbase" that is willing to spend on their titles while generally shying away from third party releases. I mean seriously, look at Endless Ocean. You think a violent, black & white beat em up is niche? Endless Ocean is a scuba diving simulator. If any other publisher put that on Wii, no amount of advertising would have elevated it anywhere even close to the vicinity of a million copies sold.

It'll probably sell over 1mil but several games do not make a trend or sound investment advice.
