Forums - Gaming - Is this the typical "core" gamer?

What is the story complaining about? The first customer, the second customer, the third customer, or the fact that you even ask about others' opinions on their trade-ins and then judge them for their answers?

I believe the problem people have with "hardcore gamers" is their snobby and elitist attitudes. Re-read your story. You're something of an elitist yourself.

thats the only thing i got outta this

The first guy I went to school with and is the same age as me, but he doesn't remember me and it makes things easier for me cause I don't want to chat it up while I'm at work, since I'm ya know working and then having another person that knew me trying to pretend to be my old chum just to cut a deal.

@Onyx

Being an elitist has nothing to do with this, if you even read the OP, I was talking about people just buying hyped games, and they missed some gems. And honest to God if someone said Chop Till you Drop is the best Wii game you wouldn't laugh your ass off?  It's like saying that Uwe Boll makes the best movies but you've not given people like Peter Jackson a chance, then going out and saying movies as a whole is rubbish and you'll never watch another one.  It's not elitism it's ignorance.

Why fire off your comments without even reading? All my story lead up to was the question do they only buy into really hyped games?  These guys are the majority of day 1 buyers they drive the high sales, the question was are they buying into the hype?  Is that what makes the game good to them? With the second guy, why get rid of something before you give it a chance? Why not try something you wouldn't normally buy before you get rid of a console and call it trash?  And maybe things like that is why it's really hard to have diverse games this gen, if you make something different people won't buy it and companies go bust due to it.

Many gamers on this site as well, people say console _________ is rubbish because of ________. Because many are guilty of the same reasoning, they'll try one or two games (with the second customer it was literally only two) and never play anything else then trash the console.  If you're ignorant to a subject you shouldn't be passing judgement.  Let's see sir, we caught you down the block from a crime scene, you match the height, weight, and color of the man seen leaving the crime scene but your face totally doesn't match you must be guilty. I know it's an exaggeration but there's not a damn thing wrong with any of the main consoles from the past 5 generations, all have a nice selection, if you don't find something you enjoy it's probably your own fault.

/rant

Sorry to get so far off base but literally it wasn't a big case of elitism (on either side), just a story I thought was funny, cause both customers thought a couple of games that fit into the 7s and 8s range were the best games on the console but never played anything else, and I figured a few other people would get a laugh as well.

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

So.. this is a story about a store clerk who wants to laugh at someone because of their tastes when it comes to gaming (the conduit is the best game on wii part) and confronts a customer because he hasn't tried all the games on the system he is selling?

Really, if a clerk would say to me "you can't complain about a system if you don't at least try the games" I would give him his due. Guess why he was at loss of words? He was propably just thinking that what is this guys problem.

It's silly to judge whether a person is a 'harecore' player or not based on his choice of console and games selection alone, it's determined by his attitude towards gaming. Someone who can throw 20+ hours everyweek into pokemen on DS is hardcore in every sense, it is obviously from what you described that both the customers are casual, they just happen to have different tastes in games that all.

I consider myself a "core" gamer and I'm nothing like that. In fact, I never buy games in a store anymore, I buy everything I own online at a lower price.
This way I can save money and avoid clueless clerks who sometimes seem to think they know my taste in games better than me simply based on their own preference (not you maxwell, the local ones...).
I don't let reviews dictate my purchases, I usually either get demo's, get recommendations from old friends whom I know to have roughly the same taste in games (doesn't always work out well but usually!) or I get sequels to games or installments in franchises I know won't disappoint based on past experience.

What I find almost comical on this site is how a lot of people almost feel personally offended that not everyone has fallen head over heels for the Wii, why is that so unfathomable? Nintendo made a sharp turn and some people were bound to fall off the wagon, Sony has shown this gen that it is certainly possible to lose fans and customers. (Yes, I've spewed fire and brimstone about the Wii myself but I'll end up buying one very soon... ).

Edit; I just realized that the OP seems to try to imply that "core" gamers are actually more goaded by the market than casuals, while it is clearly the other way around, the term "casuals" in bussiness is not exactly a compliment but usually means "will buy anything we convince them they need".

Small wonder I hate Gamestop and Wal-Mart.

Why in the world would you berate a customeer?

My theory is that Wii fans latched onto the obscure titles because they didn't see the Wii getting the same of the big 3rd party titles the 360/PS3 were getting.  The results we see today are that it seems like Wii-fans regard themselves as superior because they're playing the niche and lesser well-known titles versus some of the big budget titles of other systems.  It has become more of a badge of honor than shame to be playing the niche and lesser-known titles.

It's almost like the reverse of the kiddy comments.  Where the comments were once "We play the real games, you play the kiddy games" they've come to respond to "We play the real games, you play the over-hyped games."  To people like Max, playing Halo and the like doesn't give you "gamer cred" whereas to Max's 360 counterparts playing Wii Sports or Lost Winds doesn't give you "gamer cred."

The result is that both come off as highly elitist.  At some point it becomes easier for them to rationalize that their taste is better than the other person than accept it so you end up with reactions just like Max had his customer's opinons:  "I wanted to laugh" and "I ended up smirking."  The concept that maybe those type of games are simply what the customers enjoy probably never entered his mind.  He was busy thinking that the customers' video game experiences were inferior to his own.

I see Max's thread turned on him

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
