We call this selective memory.
Seems like ever year I see a conversation or thread about vgChartz going downhill. vgChartz hasn't gone anywhere, but many of the members still here have. Things that would have been "lulz"-worthy last year get a yawn this year. This isn't because they're of lesser quality than the past year's threads, it's because the members have moved on. Either the jokes are stale or the member has just grown mentally since then.
I mean, Soriku is a great example. Who remembers his "X seconds of Kingdom Hearts 385/2" or whatever thread? Probably one of the dumbest threads ever to grace the forums. Few people remember that one though more will now that I've reminded you (those that were here for that anyway). We could step back even farther and look at some of the threads with Hus and ckmlb.
Seriously, in the past couple of years there was a lot of stupid garbage on the forums that no one bothers to remember. It's like comparing this generation's Wii line-up with games from the NES. Sure there were a lot of classics on the NES, but there was a lot of trash floating around too. Most people tend to froget this though. We remember Super Mario Bros. 3, not Terminator, Final Fantasy, not Wizardry.
It's cool if you want to remember the good things of the past, but keep it in perspective and realize that you're picking out the most memorable stuff.
