Is GT PSP even mainline? 500k does seem on the low side though.

Yes, Kaz said so himself, that's why the name is Gran Turismo and not Gran Turismo Spyder or Gran Turismo _____ as they thought of naming it, because it's a mainline game.

And even if he didn't say anything, 800+cars, 35+tracks should be enough to tell you that it's a mainline game.

@Tbone

Just predictions from Famitsu.

Ok thx for clearing that.

I wouldn't really call GT PSP mainline - it is basically GT 4 with some new tracks and tweaks (despite what Sony may say).

1.26m for GT4 down from 1.7-1.8m for the previous two shows a decline. I don't expect GT5 to pass a million either for what it's worth and I expect GT PSP to be way down on GT5 worldwide since I don't think the game lends itself that well to being on a handheld - in the same way that Monster Hunter 3 was never going to do 2-3m copies in Japan.

No offense but Kaz Yamauchi > you.

And yeah, GT4 had some awesome Lambos, Ferraris and Bugattis. Basically I can say GT4 is just GT3 with new tracks, tweaks and cars, GT3 is just GT2 on PS2 with less cars, GT2 is just GT1 with new tracks, cars and tweaks. Shit I can spin stuff like that to any game franchise.

As far as sales go, I guess we'll have to wait and see, I'll be surprised if it only sells 500k as you suggest (or 300k as Famitsu suggests).....but I guess anything is possible and I still expect GT PSP to outsell GT5.

MH3 will barely break 1 mil in Japan, but we all expected much more from it, just look at the predictions.

Kaz > Me? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I played the game at E3, I'm a long-time GT fan, and I'm telling you that it was basically GT4. I would definitely label the game as more of a spinoff than a mainline GT title. That's just my opinion having played the game and followed the game industry for the last 10 years. I'm not spinning anything - I spoke to the lead designer on the game and played it. The dev team is pretty small for the title relative to GT5.

As for sales, I expect the game to do 300-400k on the main initial release and maybe another 200k with budget releases and I don't think there is a single region in which the title will outsell GT5 - I struggle to see what logic you are using to suggest this really (aside from larger PSP userbase but as I've said that is offset hugely by the fact that GT is more of a home console title).

As for Monster Hunter, the title has a good shot at 1.5m in Japan which is exactly where most people pegged it - I don't think anybody who follows the industry in detail expected it to do any better than that so I'm not sure what your point here is either. MH3 has performed exactly as expected.

Just basically Kaz's words about his game and automotives in general hold a lot more weight than almost anybody else's words on the matter, so if Kaz says that his game is a mainline Gran Turismo, I'm sorry but I don't think a lot of people would take your word over the man himself, hence Kaz > you.

I expect GT5 to outsell GTP PSP worldwide but not in Japan, the userbase is just too big to make up for the fact that a racing sim is indeed better played in a console.

As for MH3, it performed as expected according to certain people but not others, some Nintendo fanboys were expecting 3 million for the title. I doubt it'll get to 1.5 million, I expected 1.8 million based on Wii's huge userbase and the fact that MH3 has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years, I think 1 million is still superb, but I don't expect much more than that, we'll see the numbers for the next 2-4 weeks and then we'll have a good idea where it'll end up.

How does that ass taste?

Actually, ioi's ass is quite nice.  Not too fat and not too inverted.. almost perfect.

On the topic of Monster Hunter 3, you forget what Capcom expected for the title's launch, stop going by forum-goers and start going by those who actually have something to lose or gain by the title's market reception.

I can't really comment on GT in general but ioi has stated his opinion on GT Portable and his logic seems solid.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Monster Hunter 3 will still be selling come Christmas time - again it won't have the legs of the PSP games but will crawl to 1.5m before it has finished.

Kaz is going to say whatever he can to make GT PSP seem as big a game as he can - it's called marketing. Doesn't get away from the fact that the title is developed by a small team, is based heavily on GT4 and won't offer the graphical update GT5 will nor will it offer anywhere near the same experience being on a handheld.

Given GT4 only managed 1.26m on 20m PS2s I think anyone expecting GT PSP to do anywhere close to that in Japan will be disappointed.

Kaz is far from a marketer, you should know that if you're a really big GT fan as you claim you are. Of course GT PSP won't have the graphical upgrade of GT5, that should be obvious.

I think your analogy of GT4 on 20m PS2s is flawed, GT3 sold more with less PS2s on the market......MGS4 sold about 80% or so of MGS3 IIRC, etc...anyways I never said it would sell 1 million, I just said 500k seemed very low to me.

I disagree with your MH3 assesment. Let's just agree to disagree on the whole GT/MH3 thing.

GT3 sold more because it was bundled and released at a time when the only other game available on PS2 was Final Fantasy X. Those two titles single-handedly sold PS2 during 2001. If you look at the initial sales for GT3 you'd see the game was on track to top out at around 1.3m. If anything, this only futher proves the point that GT sales are on the decline in Japan - you would logically have expected GT4 to outsell GT3 but it didn't. Remove the fact that GT3 was bundled and you have a clear drop in sales with each sequel, that is without the fact that you are moving from PS1 / PS2 to PSP / PS3 which sell far less software in Japan than their predecessors (Monster Hunter Portable aside).

Same situation is true of MGS4 - it sold above expectations due to lack of competition vs MGS3, I don't think it is very indicative (i.e a 20% drop) of what we can expect from GT5 or Final Fantasy XIII.

If 500k seems very low but you don't expect the title to do 1m then what exactly are you expecting?

Maybe 1.5m is a tad high for MH3 but the title should sell to ~1.1-1.2m by the end of the year then I expect a budget release next year which could easily do another 300k+ so I certainly don't think it is impossible.

700-800k

MH3 is already a budget release... I would think GT PSP can outperform GT5Ps sales. Including downloads. So yeah, 700K+ in Japan over time. GT4 is still selling in thousands in Europe. Of course, the handheld thing is a bit unknown, but PSP is doing well and this game is going to launch close to the Go.
