Analyst expects Wii price cut, July NPD numbers lowest since launch

Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter has weighed in on yesterday’s NPD results for July, and has pointed out that Wii hardware sales are the lowest ever since its launch in November 2006.

To counter this, Schachter says Wii needs a price cut, and it is expected soon.

“Although Wii Sports Resort sold well, it appears to have offered little lift to Wii hardware sales, increasing the probability in our view that Nintendo must lower the price soon (we expect a September cut),” stated Schachter.

According to the NPD figures, Wii sold 252,000 units in the US during July.

No way, there is no way wii is going to drop in price, why would they? They are outselling the competition by a good amount..

I certainly don't expect one to come by September, unless Nintendo announces it at GamesCom (and Nintendo has always kinda phoned it in at Liepzig before, so i don't see why Cologne will make it significant)

Only a 48k difference this month between 360 and Wii.

I would expect it next year.

That is not good, for the Wii. (from the perspective that the Wii is a shining blue ocean phenomenom washing away the hardcore consoles)

Tease.

Also one thing to keep in mind is that unlike the PS3 and the more expensive 360 SKUs, the Wii has been priced at mass market price since launch. Consequently I suspect a price cut for the Wii will have a significantly lesser impact.
It would appear that it's simply a matter of demand slowing down for the wii.

I agree, even though it was the 2nd lowest since launch, it was still pretty good :)

The wii will not have a pricecut, that's a "red ocean" strategy. Nintendo only has to work on getting new, compelling games that sell the system. Not Wii Music and Animal Crossing, which failed to sell the system.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
