Forums - Nintendo - I heard from this guy Wii can do HD.

What is with this revival of old topics? Anyway the Wii could do HD, but it isn't practical. There are much more rewarding graphical effects that Wii games can't do in HD, but can in SD. The only games that I can see running good in 720p are games that don't require too much things running other than visuals and/or are sectioned into a small world rather than a large one. Some genres this may include are sports and racing games. Everything else will probably look and run worst in 720p.

At those who said Nintendo locked it out, any sources to back that up? Otherwise it is pure speculation.

Unless that guy is Satoru Iwata, I don't give a damn.

No, it can't. It is locked out of resolutions higher than 576p to the best of my knowledge, and might not be able to even go that high (I am unsure of PAL TV standards). It was a deliberate decision by Nintendo. The GPU itself is capable of outputting in HD standards as I recall though. So with a firmware update you could have the Wii capable of outputting in HD, but as of right now it is absolutely impossible.

PAL Wiis only have 480i, 576i and 480p, unfortunately no 576p.
