Forums - PC - Help building a college laptop

I'm going to college in a few weeks and I need help building myself a laptop. I don't want to bring my desktop to college with me since I'll have enough limited space already xP

so, here is what i need:

- small size/weight ( i'm thinking maybe 16" or so)

- at least a 300 gb hdd

- a good enough graphics card to play valve games (hl2, hl2 ep1/2, portal, tf2, l4d, etc) at max resolution with a constant 30 or 60 fps.

- a not so loud fan T_T; i hate hearing my fan over my computer noises

- i'd like to have it before the 20th

i'm a console gamer so i don't know much about building pc's and what's good and not.

thanks for the help :D

If you want to play games, build a desktop. Don't even bother with doing it on a laptop.

gaming laptops tend to be rather expensive right from the start. If you get a cheaper version, your laptop might overheat and the fan will constantly be on.

The very lowest graphics card you should aim for is the nvidia 6800- that can play most of the good games on the market (not crysis and games of that caliber).

You also have very few options in 'building a laptop'. Laptops are custom designs made by the individual companies to fit their own specific form factors etc.

If you want to build, build a desktop, if you want a laptop, buy one as theres no point trying to build it.

Tease.

That is certainly a monumental task.

My advice: Screw building it and buy a good gaming one (if there are ones)

I have a laptop with nvidia's 8600m GT that can run all Valve games med/high. A laptop with an 8600 shouldn't be too expensive these days.

You will get much bigger bang for your buck on a desktop but laptops are fine for gaming.

Mobile console with HDTV FTW.

circuitcity.com is running great deals on laptops. Some seem to be high spec, but others more knowledgeable can tell you whether a certain one will meet your needs. I'll post a few up in a minute.

Save your money on a gaming laptop and just get a dece laptop. Luckily, you can actually get a decent laptop for not a lot of money that plays most Valve games since the Source Engine scales so well, just don't expect to play them on the highest setting.

Walking around Best Buy (or whatever your store of choice) and find a laptop you like. Check online to see if you can cheaper (like if you found a Dell, check Dell.com) and then see if the store you're at does price match.

Buy a MSI gt725-074...They may be hard to find because the gt729 is coming out soon. Its got the mobility radeon hd4850 in it. It can run everything I throw at it maxed out 1650x1050.... cod 4, l4d, bioshock, company of heroes, command and conquer....get 9800 on 3dmark, best purchase ive ever made. Zero overheating too, the fan doesn't even come on.. If you really research it you'll find its the best gaming laptop bang for your buck you can get, MSI made something to marvel at.
