Forums - Sales - Could the PSP's big Holiday games outsell the DS's?

No, it's not going to even be close.

@ Fleeman, I agree that total software sales for DS will dominate the PSP, but this is just about games releasing during the holiday period. Thanks for the information about Mario and Luigi, I'll edit that in.

I mean the PSP's software sales have been better than it has been recently.. Im not comparing it to any platform

Errr, they are much lower than during the first half of the years actually, due to the slow time of the years and lower sale in Japen because of DQ9. Except if by recently you mean only just 2 or 3 week ago. It will  get better after the PSPGo release since it will boost software sale but we won't be able to know by how much since it will all be by DD.

OP: All these DS title put together will beat all the PSP one together, a lot the PSP one aren't "big", but I think the best seller will be GT, None of DS title listed seem to be both fast and massive seller. LTD maybe one could be a surprise and beat GT but during the holiday quarter? Not a chance.

I'm surprised by the number of people who don't even think it's a possibility. Here is a look at the games on the DS, and the sales of previous games on the DS.

-Pokemon Explorers of time has sold 4.45 million, but that included 1.5 million in Japan where Explorers of Sky has already released. Suggesting maybe 3 million total in the West, maybe less if follows the decrease in sales seen in Japan.
I'm guessing 1-1.5 million for this game this holiday.
-Mario and Sonic at the Summer Games has sold 4.33 million on DS. However the sales were not very front loaded and the summer games are more popular than the winter games.
I'm guessing 1-1.5 million this holiday.
-Cooking Mama 2 has sold 2.66 million. But this game sold based on legs not initial sales, it has also sold significantly less than the first Cooking Mama.
I'm guessing 400-600k this holiday.
- Call of Duty 4 has sold .58m in America and we don't have Other's data for the game. In America again this game's sales were based on legs more than initial sales.
I'm guessing 400-600k this holiday.
- The Legend of Zelda:Phantom Hourglass has sold 4.52m. However the game was bundled in America for awhile.
I'm guessing 1.25-1.75m this holiday.

That adds up to 4.05 m on the low end and 5.95 million on the high end. I think the PSP's potentially biggest games GT & GTA releasing at the beginning of October, giving them 3 full months of sales, at least puts the low end in reach.

The thing is that most of the DS game listed are sure fire hit (except for CoD, I don't know why you put it there, it's not going to be in the top 6 by a long shot, Cooking Mama 3 either, it's a slow seller) while the PSP one are either question mark or simply isn't going to sell that well.

GT will be a big seller, Chinatown most likely will sell well but much less than other PSP GTA games, it's not attached to a big console game and it's a port of a DS game which mean it's not build from the ground up for the PSP. Tekken 6 is a question mark, it's a declining franchise in an unpopular but well suited for handheld genre. AC is another question mark, could sell well but it's unlikely, the other 2 simply aren't going to move that many unit.

PS: Doesn't Kingdom Heart for DS release during the holiday?

Nothing can beat the words "mario" or "zelda". This is just time tested fact.
