Forums - Gaming - Pachter says Best Buy's new games at used prices program will fail

Costco already sells new games for below GS used game prices. Too bad Costco has a very limited selection.

Well, that means it will be completely sucessful then... I wonder if a company put them up to this...

Seriously, why does anybody care what this guy thinks? Mr. Bimbo from Muppet Treasure Island had more credibility.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

lol, I work at best buy (in fact I live about a block away from this test market store, but I work at a different one). Knowing the profit margins we have games and price differences between new and used games, I can tell you that this program is pretty much guaranteed to fail.

Best Buy makes pretty much no money on system sales (it's like 2 or 3 dollars in profit on xbox and ps3 and like 8 on wii). So, if they remove the profit from game sells... there isn't going to be a big reason to justify all that shelf space. I would count on this program going any farther than the Jordan Landing store here in West Jordan.

Plus if BB succeeds then I don't have to worry about the price too much, recieving gutted/scratches copies of games that are "new". Plus, apparently Patcher isn't exactly known to being a credible person.

It depends on what deals they have on the back end with publishers. Publishers don't like Gamestop, so theres a chance that they are the ones silently supporting this move.

In any case its a win for them even if they loss lead on the games because I would guess that gamers buy a lot of multimedia products and getting them in store may lead to greater spending on things like DVDs, TVs, Stereos etc where they do have quite large margins. This isn't just about the games, it goes to all the other products. Its the same as supermarkets loss leading on bread but making a killing on selling you the peanut butter.

Tease.

If this were to roll out, Gamestop would be able to put an end to it swiftly. Got a huge title coming out that's going to have a monster first week like Modern Warfare 2? All Gamestop has to do is price the used price at something ridiculous like $20 before it even comes out and advertise it. No one will trade the game in anyways since they're just buying them and won't want the bad trade-in value, and Best Buy just took a $40 hit per game on a gigantic release.

This is a war Gamestop cannot lose.

I see alot of these Pachter threads. Why do we care what he thinks? Is he super special or something and can predict the future?

^ Actually, quite the opposite.

In Australia, some store will offer price match but only if they can prove that the local competitor has to product your quoting in stock (they would literally ring the competitor and ask for availibility). Would a similiar scheme be consider reasonable for BestBuy? Afterall advertising a second hand game for $20 is a lot different than having a copy at $20 for sale
