The music was great, no doubt about that. Characters other than Vivi, I really couldn't care for less... Especially Zidane, I thought his design was great but he felt hollow to me. The style was fitting I suppose, it's just that the game nearly bored me to death. The story felt extrememly bland and the gameplay and pacing just felt dull. Don't know why but I had more fun with 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10-2 even the the  core gameplay was pretty much the same for all 6... atleast that's how it felt to me. But sometiimes a boring story with characters I don't care about often ruins the gameplay for me so that may have played a part.

Perhaps I just didn't play long enough, but after making it a few hours into Disc2 I just stopped. I just don't think it should take that long for a game to grab my interest. FF3 was a bit slow but it was somewhat enjoyable for me. FFVI grabbed my attention quite quickly and it also felt like a harder game, and I like a more challenging experience. FFVII grabbed my attention right away with the begining. 10-2's gameplay was just plain fun compared to all the other FF's for me, and although I didn't play 10 yet, the story wasn't amazing and when I had to return the disc to my bro I was only 49% done, I actually enjoyed it. 9, 12 and then 3 I guess are so far the weakest parts of the series for me.

As for not liking them because of some Kiddy impression, I loved Golden Sun, it's one of my [if not my] favourite RPG series and the characters felt just as young, if not a little younger than FF9.

This is honestly the first time I've heard someone refer to Golden Sun as Kiddy.
If anything I'd put it up there with Suikoden II, but below FF Tactics in maturity level.

In my own experience, FFIX is my first numbered FF. I bought it because Tactics was my favorite game at the time and they shared the same name. Bought it, beat it, became one of my favorites because of the emotion I felt during the ending credits where I felt like a long wonderful journey was over. Even now, the ending credits is the part I remember the most.

As for my other FF experiences, the only other FF I've beaten is FF-X.
Bought VII an VIII right after I've beaten IX and was disappointed. Didn't get to finish both even though I invested a lot of time on it(last disc on both).
Also got IV on the DS, didn't finish either because I ws spoiled by the modern JRPG's.
After playing "Tales of" games, FFIV's characters felt 2 dimensional and I just didn't care for them.
Played XII aswell, made it to killing the white Chocobo side story, the story was boring to me though so i just stopped.
X-2 was also a disappointment.

Same here! I jumped up and cheered at that part at the end. I still think it has the best ending, because I cared so much about Zidane and Garnet.

@ DGc

If FFIX's battles bored you, then the other PS1 FFs must have made you fall asleep as this game is much faster than them.

I haven't played 8 but I'm enjoying 7 much more right now. And like I said, sometimes when I don't like the story and characters, it ruins the gameplay for me.

I don't think it needs a remake. I am one of the biggest Final Fantasy fans out there, and IX is fine the way it is. Granted I think it's probably the 6th best Final Fantasy game for me, but SE doesn't need to waste it's time on re-makes. They should focus on games to come.

Square always has remakes handled by another company. It doesn't take up any of their time, just some of their capital.

I was mainly referring to the age. Neither game felt kiddy to me, it's just that the characters you play as in both games were very young, felt the same age to me.

I haven't played Tactics, hear it's coming to the PS Store so I may check it out. I really enjoyed Tactics Advanced on the GBA however.

I don't think that's what Naz meant about "Kiddy".
Think of it more as atmosphere, the "Magic", the art, the story and the quirky characters come together to build an atmosphere somewhat similar to the atmosphere Disney movies of old have. Or for a more recent example Pixar.

Considering the game is heavily story and character driven, the way I see it, enjoyment depends largely on the age group of an audience.
Movies and anime go through the same motions with it's fans.
Once teens try to become young adults mentally they usually dismiss "kiddy" stuff and go for the more mature stuff, or something they can relate to. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but majority subconsciously fall into this.

It's like people loving Disney when they were kids, disliking it when they are teens, and loving it again when they're older.
I think FF IX falls in the same category with the nature of it's atmosphere.
FFVII and FFVIII on the other hand caters more to teens but most adults are annoyed by the angst.

Well I have to say that it did give that type of impression, but it was never a negative to me. It's not the reason why I disliked the game.

Exactly. It's a mindset issue. Most people don't even do it conciously, but teens feel embarassed by anything that can make them associated with children, whereas children and adults find what they like and don't usually give a damn what anyone else thinks about it.

They will eventually have to re-make it. Look at the series, almost every one of the main entries has seen some form of re-make or re-release. As time goes on and PS1 becomes even more dated, Square will see the opportunity to make money.

As long as they farm it out to Mistwalker (and Mistwalker in turn farms it out to someone good), I'm down for a remake. Otherwise, don't touch it.
