Blame it on still being drunk from the previous night. Blame it on the long car ride. Hell, blame it on both. But during my ride back home from Roanoke, VA, something came across my mind and I thought about it for about an hour. Why do I have console allegiances? I like to game, period. If a game is good, I'll want to play it. My own behavior really amazed and confused me. One minute I'll talk down about Microsoft, and then the next minute, I'll be enjoying several hours of Halo 3 with my friends.
Sorry it took so long to realize, but why be a fanboy? Games are games. If they are fun, they are fun, regardless of platform. From this day on, I toss away any console allegiance, because it's pointless. So what if a game doesn't come on the PS3. I have a 360, so I'll be able to enjoy it, and vice versa. That's the reason I even bought a 360 in the first place (after my PS3). So I could play games, not talk about how bad RRoD is.
I've already tossed away consistently arguing that the PS3 will get into 2nd place...and the console fanboyism should've ended there, but sadly it didn't. The only reason people are even fanboys of the PS3 right now is because it's in last place, and they just can't wait to see it rise up against all odds. But that shouldn't matter. If the current market is any indication, all major games are going to end up on the PS3, regardless of its' marketshare.
Now, the final note is going to be one where many may say "you lost all credibility with that one sentence". But, I don't care. I don't like the Wii. It's the most confusing console ever. It has by far the worst 3rd party support (in terms of games that us "gamers" care about), and the only thing people really talk about are upgraded iterations of games that didn't prevent the Gamecube and N64 from being in last place. Yet it has sold over 50M units. I just don't understand why a system, where shovelware sells boatloads, is the market leader, even though a lot of people are effectively ignoring it. Madden is coming in a cartoony version, Dead Space is just a on rails spin off. Modern Warfare is coming.....2 years after it came out, and on the same date as MW2. Growing up, I didn't know about things like marketshare and who was buying the systems, so the term "casual" may have more effect than I think. But a system that is winning because everyone is buying "Gallop and Ride" or "Imagine Babyz" over Madworld and others just baffles me. I don't know how to close up after that, so I guess I'll just take being called ignorant or stupid for that last paragraph, but that's just my opinion.
But like I said...no more console allegiance. I don't play sales, I don't play graphics, I don't play C3LL, and I sure don't play RRoD. I play games. Hardware shouldn't matter. Software should. Hardware is going to stay the same, but the software is the variable. And because it's the variable, it should be what everyone focuses on.
