God of War has an extremely simple, but enjoyable story. It has very little details, which will make it easier to be translated, as opposed to lets say someone trying to make an MGS movie. I never played GeoW, but I defenitely know that GoW's story is designed to be like an summer action movie.
All the game was, was well paced and coreographed action, with carefully coordinated, short, and really enjoyable cut scenes. Really nice and simple symbolisms allow you to get the character instantly (as soon as Kratos dedicates his life to Ares, he becomes chained to weapons)...
I like to think of GoW like Gladiator. Simple, but not dumb story. Simple, but non shallow main character. Lots of pure action, with some really enjoyable and short story/dialogue that only adds, instead of detracts from the atmosphere and pacing.
I mean, it's just awesome to see how Kratos becomes an God of War. Ares in the end did succeed, succeeded more than he wanted to. He wanted to make Kratos inhumane by getting rid of the only thing left of his humanity (his family), but instead that only brought up more emotion and humanity from Kratos: Anger. And that anger and guilt, which he couldn't get rid of in the end, allowed him to both become strong, and suffer even more.
That trade off is what continues into the sequels, and hopefully Kratos can stop his self destruction in the third game. But it's in the first game where we see Kratos desperately trying to redeem himself, only becoming eternally cursed to become the God of what he wanted to leave.
