Forums - Sales - What will be the top 10 best selling titles of 2009?

Worldwide for 2009 I'd estimate something like this -

10) The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - 3.5m

Is this based on the fact that it will be releasing during the holiday? Cause Phantom Hourglass only sold around 3 million in its first 12 weeks.

I'd imagine Spirit Tracks will have a better opening thanks to the holiday weeks.

Pokemon Platinum, if you count it, will be in there.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you count it?

I meant if you would count it as a 2009 title. It released in 2008 in Japan, didn't it? Same with FF13 for 2010.

This isn't about when it launched... it's just how many it sold in 2009.

Wii Fit didn't launch in 2009 but it has sold more in 2009 than any other game.

I was referring to the OP's comment of not many 2009-launching games making the list.

DQ9 will make it on there no matter what (probably).

I would suspect that probably just Halo ODST for Xbox 360 and Call of Duty 6 will make that list for non Nintendo consoles. The PS3 doesn't have the install base, and really its only because they will be extremely front loaded as they are coming in as sequels to 5M+ franchises.

Whoa! That's a lot, but some of it seems a bit strange.

Mario Kart Wii - 4-6m.

It has already sold 4M. There are 17 weeks left of the year, and it is currently selling 100K/week. Even without a christmas boost, it can't go below 5M. With christmas, I don't see how it can fail to sell 7M.

Wii Fit - 9-13M

It has already sold 7.7M, and is selling 150K/week. There's quite simply no chance of it failing to sell 11M, is there?

Pokemon Platinum - 4m

It has already sold 3.4M, and it is selling at a fair pace. I don't see how it can fail to sell 5M personally.

EA Sports Active - 2.5M

It's at 1.6M, is launching in Japan, and sold 70K last week. I cannot see it failing 3M, and 4M seems much more likely.

All in all, it seems as if you think christmas is hardly going to give a boost at all, or am I misunderstanding you?

Edit:

You also have both Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros selling a mere 500K more for the year, don't you think that is underestimating them? I mean, that would make them sell less during the christmas quarter than in any of the other quarters.

Edit 2:

You're including Spirit Tracks, yet I can find no proof of it being confirmed for 2009, did I miss something?

You have to remember that Wii Fit will be discontinued once Wii Fit Plus hits so beginning October 1st this year, Wii Fit's sales reign will start to come to an end.

My list..

1. Wii Sports (Lots)

2. Wii Fit (10M)

3. Wii Sports Resort (8M)

4. Mario Kart Wii (7M)

5. Wii Fit Plus (6.5M)

6. Call of Duty: MW2 - 360 (6M)

7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (5.5M)

8. Halo 3 ODST (5M)

9. Pokemon Platinum (5M)

10. Dragon Quest IX (4M)

i doubt that wii fits sells will stop once plus comes, people will be able to buy it without the balance board for a cheap price so buying the first and the new one may be seen as a good deal

Are you certain of this? I don't really think so. Brain Age 1 kept selling after Brain Age 2 launched, right?
While that analogy isn't perfect, I also believe that Wii Fit Plus is being sold without the balance board. If that is correct, Wii Fit will definitely keep on selling.

Yes, you can buy the Balance Board standalone, but a vast majority won't.

Edit:

It seems strange to me, that Nintendo would eliminate Wii Fit, especially if it means for people buying Wii Fit plus + a Balance Board (which now is 50 dollars + 20 = 70, instead of Wii Fit's 90 dollars). The only reasonable thing I see them doing is trying to continue the stream that they have made.

Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii will all be in the top 10. Its likely that Wii Fit Plus & New Super Mario Bros Wii will be on that list as well. If Gran Turismo 5 launches this year then that along with Assassins Creed 2 & Halo 3:ODST and Modern Warfare 2 should all be on there too.

I'm certain that Wii Fit is being discontinued as Wii Fit Plus contains all of Wii Fit's content plus the extra and Nintendo can then justify a higher selling price. There is no reason for Wii Fit to be continued.

Wii Fit Plus will come packaged with the balance board (taking over from Wii Fit) and also without, so that it can replace the the original for the owners that want to upgrade.
