Forums - Sony - It's amazing how effective Sony's "PS3 power" PR has been.

LOL...people are posting that the cell is more powerful than the I7 Intel CPU... the cell in the PS3 is gimped to begin with with as its missing one of the SPE cores.

Besides the "real" cell does not have 8 cores, it has only one full function core, then there are 8 SPEs, two of which are not used for processing in games. The SPEs are more like co-processors, they arent autonomous and they dont have the same instruction set as the main core nor do they even have a cache.

The I7 CPU which has 4 real CPU cores would rape the cell all night long if they were going head to head.

Sony sold everyone the tech BS as usual...PS3 is hardly any more powerful than the 360 when all is said and done.

^ it's rather pointless to say that, though, even if you are 100% correct. the fanboys who bought the sony PR aren't going to turn around no matter what happens.

but thank you for pointing out the obvious, just for reference on the thread.

I don't know, but it seems like every casual gamer (and some hardcore gamers) that I've spoken to all have this idea that the PS3 is "light years" beyond everything else, including PCs. My entire family, for example, has this idea that I have the most advanced piece of machinery in the planet right now, and my brother, a 360 owner, thinks that the COD4 that runs on his console is a lot worse looking than mine (he runs it on an even better TV than mine).

It just seems like corporate brainwashing to me. Any of you experience this thing?

That's the truth. Sony used to be the company where the graphics didn't matter, but they would pump out great games (Because theym were the only big corporation in town). Because of Sony's business decisions outside of the gaming realm, it forced them to put the burden of an unneeded product into their system.

why is it in 3rd place still? not powerful enough I see

Powerful things will always come with a hefty price tag. Sony left their former installed base with a heavy burden to carry.

Heh. Imagine Kaz Hirai's face after the subprime crisis tipped over in 2007. Funny enough, America would've carried Sony to at least a second place spot if Blu Ray wasn't in it.

I wouldn't call it corporate brainwashing. More like strategic advertising. Only the tech-savvy can really appreciate the power of the PS3 and understand it's differences to other hardwares (PC, 360). Everyone else is just like 'T3H C3LL!?!? 1 MU5T H4V3!'

Mmmmm OK, I'll answer on that.

On specific tasks, the CELL is far better than an i7 processor, things like crunching data.

The CELL is used in many different platforms, including high performance servers and calculators. I doubt the i7 is much.

NOW, when it comes to the PS3 and gaming, the CELL is not so brilliant. Not only because of itself, but because of the old GPU, the low memory (which is something that can be dealt with), and the "new" architecture that developpers had to learn to work with.

So, all in all, the CELL is a great CPU, very very powerful. But the PS3 is not vastly superior to a 360 when it comes to graphics in games, and totally inferior to an i7 computer with a recent GPU.

To go back on topic, you're right, Sony has been good with their PR, but until recently they had nothing to prove it. Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and GT5 are/will be good proofs.
