Forums - Sony - Sony Finalizes Backwards Compatible Memory Stick XC With 2TB Maximum Cap...

"the form factor for these new flash cards are (on paper) the same as pre-existing memory sticks, which means that these high capacity juggernauts are most likely backwards compatible."

How sure are they on that? SD, SDHC, SDXC are all the same form factor but they're not really backwards compatible. There's more to it than just size.

True statement. For example, my friend has an older digicam that takes SD cards, but cannot recognize SDHC cards.

It's a pirates dream.

Too bad I don't pirate.

You don't need 2TB removable storage to pirate on massive levels. I've seen huge DS libraries stored on 8GB micro chips with R4s so storage has not been an issue in quite some time.

Plus for the amount you'd be paying for a 2TB card just to store stolen software, you'd be able to outright BUY all those games at retail prices.

But 2TB makes the concept of carrying an entire library of music and HD video with you on the go (along with any other files) a reality.

Beyond that, not sure what else it would be used for with general purpose computing unless read/write speeds are fast enough to replace hard drives. It would be a boon for netbook, notebook and any portable format storage.

Fair enough.  I just assumed PSP games were huge.   Never met anyone who had more then a couple downloaded at a time.

Since you can now get a 4Gb memstick for 20$ at walmart, I don't expect these to be expensive.

Perhaps something like 32GB's starting at 120$. 64GB's starting at 150-160$. If these were to launch right this second we would see some high prices but I think they'll be around these prices when they really launch.

I'll probably be picking up a one of these. All depends on what PSP model's I have around the time... for a 16GB, I don't think i'll need much more than what it comes with right out of the box.

4 ≈ One

I don't think anything near max 2TB spec is going to be available for quite awhile. Sounds like the announcement simply means they have the specifications outlined projecting for developments over the next several years.

I'm not even sure the photolithographic technology even exists to print memory storage circuits that dense yet or we'd be seeing much higher capacity SSD drives currently, most likely at lower prices.

32GB NAND chips have only recently been made inexpensively enough to use in consumer devices like the iPhone.

But with the rate at which solid state memory is growing, having onboard memory seems quite a bit less favorable given its non expandability (expansion ports aside) without replacing the device.

Can't wait for affordable 32GB stix (defined as $99 or lower). I'm struggling to store my mobile media on 8GB cards, and it's a pain, constantly having to manage the memory. Fortunately, the smaller screen means video file sizes don't have to be huge, but it's annoying to constantly convert MP4s into MP3s and delete archival material.

It's funny, how mobiles have changed the way we consume media. I can't stand traveling without my trusty, tattered, battered, ever-reliable PSP 2K these days -- even taking the bus to school, I need my morning hit of Serebro.

they will replace ps3 HDD with this is cheaper :P

btw: many phones only needed a firmware update to support 4gb-16gb cards.

Looks like sony found a way to profit on pirates then :)

That is nuts... simply mad, why not go to 1gb first, so there is a very large scale card that we can actually afford!
