Forums - Nintendo - No price cut for the Wii and Wii's successor is in progress said Iwata

I don't know if it has been posted here before but according to Gamekult,  no price cut is planed for the Wii.

Satoru Iwata said that the Wii will stay at its current price because he thinks that the drop in sales were mainly due to the missing of blockbuster game releases like Mario Kart Wii one year ago. He said Wii Music (2.65M) and Animal Crossing (3.38M) sales were disappointing but expect a rise in hardware with the release of Wii Sport Resort and New Super Mario Bros. Wii for which he expect for each game to reach 10 millions unit sold by the end of this fiscal year (March 2010). He also added that Nintendo is currently working on the successor of the Wii even if it won't be launched in a ''near future''.

Hmmmm no price cut coming soon? If the PS3 and the 360 cut their price I doubt Nintendo won't do the same.

I'm not buying it.

Why do you think Nintendo will cut the price just because the competition does? You may have noticed all the other price cuts they've had without the Wii getting one. Sounds like thinking from two years ago, to be honest.

It's not news that they're working on Wii's successor. No big company ever stops designing new products - you can bet that each of the big three have been working on their next consoles since the current ones launched. Plans for them change often, but preliminary work would have started very shortly after Wii, PS3, and 360 launched, respectively.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

There won't be a Wii price cut this year, unless things get really bad and NSMB:Wii and Wii F+ somehow flop, which they won't.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Actually I am hoping that wii sales will drop that much that Nintendo will cut the price and with new 199€ price point I would maybe buy one. Now it is just too overpriced when comparing tech and games (IMO) to the competion.

MH3 accompanied sales increase of Wii HW in Japan prevents any price drop. Additionally, the black Wii and then some additional colours still need to be released in the West.

Wii Music and Animal Crossing are at like 3 million each, and these are disappointing sales? What were they expecting, 10? As for a price cut, no one ever admits to one too soon. For obvious reasons. But he's right, the Wii has had a thin year this year thus far, few big games released especially compared to last year. So I think they're serious about no price cut any time soon.

Also Sony and MS have cut their prices several times, the Arcade even costing less than Wii, and Nintendo has yet to follow. So any additional price cuts probably won't force Nintendo to do anything. Since thus far, those price cuts haven't hurt Nintendo. I think it's safe to say the Arcade won't get any additional price cuts, nor would any other SKU from Sony or MS be able to match the Wii's price point. Then again, it wouldn't matter.

They were hoping for Animal Crossing and Wii Music to help carry Wii momentum over to the next year as their earlier big broad market titles did. In that sense they failed (though it's highly unlikely that they didn't profit).

Just because a price cut isn't in the cards doesn't mean Nintendo won't do something to stimulate sales. New SKUs are a likely possibility, either colours or bundles. In the case of Monster Hunter, Nintendo did both.

Nothing would push the WM+ like bundling Wii Sports Resort with every new Wii sold this holiday.

I'm surprised they haven't done anything like that yet. I was hoping they'd treat Wii M+ more like a platform, with a platform like launch, but it seems they're being cautious and seeing how customers react before treating it like a full fledged platform.

If they're overly cautious it could be wasted and enthusiasm for the device could falter. It's just a good thing that third parties don't seem to be missing the boat this time with M+. The next big M+ games seem awfully far away though...
