Forums - Gaming - Why Zero Punctuation is harmful to videogames.

Zero Punctuation is entertaining, at times.  However, after having prolonged exposure to the reviews, and comparing them to my experience with the games, I have the conclusion that there are aspects to ZP that is harmful to videogames (the industry, hobby, etc...).  Here is some:

1. The hatred of motion control is a detriment to immersion factor and also the growth of interest in videogames.  The hatred of motion control by Yahtzee sets back advancements in videogames, for new controls.  If we were to listen to Yahtzee, there would either be no sports games like bowling or tennis at all, or we would be force to play them with a joypad controller, with a bunch of buttons.  And if you aren't a hardcore gamer, and like the Wiimote's simplicity, well TOO BAD.  You shouldn't like it.  You should stop playing videogames.

2. Yahtzee can cause people to not play games they would enjoy.  Three games in particular: Ghostbusters, Red Faction: Guerrilla, and Wii Sports Resort, if I listend to Yahtzee, I would of never bought at all, and would of missed out on.

3. Yahtzee has the interests of a psychopath when it comes to videogames.  An example is his viewing Prototype as a program that would appease a mass murderer who eats brains, and thought it was good.  He HATES morality systems, and apparently also thinks that games with consequences are a BAD thing (Red Faction: Guerrilla).  Only games where you do carnage when the game wants you to be good, is what appeals to Yahtzee.  So, I will say here, Yahtzee is the embodiment of why the U.S congress wants to ban violent videogames.

4. Yahtzee is causing hat envy.  This is a minor point, but I believe he is causing people who would not consider buying hats, to get them, because he has a cool one.

Anyhow, I am off to watch the latest ZP review, so I am out of time here.  I am sure I can dredge up other reasons why ZP is harmful to videogames, but I need to run.  Now excuse me, as I take half of my tongue out of my cheek.

So because i don't like the Wii and its games i should stop being a gamer by your reasoning... Somehow i don't think that is going to happen!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so if he does not like the Wii or the games he mentions then that is his opinion... I mean noone is forcing you to watch the 'reviews'...

The problem with your logic is the fact that you think people take Yahtzee seriously.

I'll take gaming advice from Yahtzee when I get my daily news from The Onion.

His show is hilarious, but it's completely idiotic.

I think the problem with ZP is calling them "reviews".

It's more genuine and honest than any other review. But I'll address your points anyway.

1. He's right in that there have been no good motion control games, even by Nintendo. He admits WS and WSR are fun with friends (which they are) and I take his general criticism of motion control as there has been no good game that uses it correctly and fully. Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Wii Music, Animal Crossing, and Super Paper Mario have been the big first-party titles, right? Not ONE of them uses motion control (just the pointer doesn't count) as a major gameplay element. And no third-party has even come close.

2. All reviewers are like this. You can probably find poor reviews on Gamespot/IGN/etc. for any game that you like.

3. No. He's not a fan of moral choice systems when they are poorly done, shallow and an excus to double the lifetime of the game. If they didn't make it so obvious what the 'good' and 'bad' actions were and have the consequences so extreme (Utopia or Tyranny) it would be useful. He also hates things shoved into a game to be a bullet point on the back of the box or as a substitute for good gameplay. If the game isn't (subtly!) designed around it it's a bad game.

4. Agree 100%

Read the last line of the first post. It was a joke.

I am aware of that.

His shows are hilarious, especially his review of Wii sports resort...but one must not forget that his reviews only express his opinions in a very sarcastic way, weather you agree with him or not is another matter.
