Forums - Sony - Sony must discontinue the ps2 to sell more ps3s

For the first time in history we are seeing the almost 10year old  ps2 outselling its next gen successor once in awhile.

This has never happend before in the video game industry and it made me think about what would happen if they discontinue the ps2 soon.

I know sony makes a profit from each ps2 sold and this helped almost balance out some of the loses made from the ps3 but they really need to start focusing on the ps3 , I estimate that the ps3 will sell 50% more than its selling now if the ps2 gets discontinued by the end of this year.

For example instead of selling 100thousand ps3s it will sell 150.000thousand ps3s a week and will close the gap with the xbox 360 in 3years.

But this can only happen if they release the 300$ ps3 slim with ps2 compatibility without it they wont do as good.

99$ vs 300$-400$

not even in the same race ...

by the way, 3 useless thread with only 30 posts so far ... it is a bit too much according to me

Time to Work !

By doing this sales would simply go to the next cheaper console. Which would be their competitor the 360. So no they mustn't.

agree. I cant believe ps2 still sells so well to be honest.

but if theres a market for it, why discontinue it?

Maybe if the ps3 had ps2 BC, this would help the ps3 in some fashion.

Because like this they are stopping potential X360 sales and setting up future sales for the PS3! Truth or what?

Don't be ridiculous. A consumer doesn't think "Hmm, $99 PS2 or $399 PS3? What? No PS2? Okay, I'll buy the PS3". The average consumer would just buy a 360 or a Wii if the PS2 wasn't available. Perhaps if the PS3 was cheaper and HAD BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY with the PS2, this might come close to achieving something (probably wouldn't). Perhaps when the PS3 reaches $199. And is making a profit. Sony would rather make money than lose it, so really, they WANT the PS2 to outsell the PS3 for now. Why cut the most successful console of all time, which is profitable, to boost the sales of a significantly less successful console which loses money?

Also, STOP MAKING THREADS! You've made like four now, and you're not even at 50 posts!

The PS2 is being used as a tool by Sony to keep people away from the HD market until they are able to compete in it from a price perspective. People who buy purely on price go for the PS2 rather then buying a 360.

Killing PS2 will help 360 more then PS3 until PS3 is more competitive on price. That's why it isn't disappearing.

The numbers to compare aren't $99 and $399.

Sony makes a profit per PS2 and a loss per PS3 sold. Selling less PS2s and more PS3's is not what they want

what happened to the OP?
