Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo on why hardcore titles can't sell on the Wii (and a question)

When I say hardcore titles, I mean third party hardcore. This is before I get bombarded with arguments.

http://news.spong.com/article/18751/Nintendo-Not-Sure-Why-Hardcore-Wii-Titles-Dont-Sell

Pretty quick article, but an interesting read into one of the minds in Nintendo.

On a side note, I spoke to a friend of mine today and he said that he was asked by a friend if he wanted to buy a 360 with five games, because he bought an updated version. He turned down a $200.00 offer, because he said he would play too much. He's trying to cut back on gaming and thats why he has the Wii. Good games come in from time to time instead of in a flood like the other systems. I was quite shocked to hear this, because he has one of the largest purchased PS2 collections of anyone I know. He basically sticks with the PS2 and the Wii. We end up playing the PS2 over the Wii, but when we have chicks over we play the Wii like crazy. He only plays the 360 and PS3 at my house and he said he's fine with that, but he wants to cut back on gaming. He's like 5 years older than me, so I understand his point...but am baffled at the same time. Any thoughts?

Well, he's about to be disappointed if he only wants good new games to be released every once in a while, 'cuz the Wii's release list for the next six months or so looks sexy

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Well I'd have to agree with him, because I don't see much either, but more power to you brother. Game on! I say get the most that you can.

My friend says that a lot about his wallet. Funny enough. It's funny that when you say 360 or PS3 he runs for the hills like you're going to break his diet and give him a chocolate cake or something. LOL

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Core games don't sell on the Wii? Look at MH3 lines.

The reasons past core games on the Wii don't sell too well is because of one of these reasons, or even two or three:

1. They're niche.
2. They're new IPs.
3. They're way too short to justify the price.

1. Madworld and the conduit deserved better.

2. That is understandable.

3. How would most gamers know that its too short to justify the price?

I was posting Nintendos response to the question, but if someone already posted it, thats news to me.

Of course Nintendo knows why but I doubt they want to upset anybody be telling them that their games aren't high enough quality..

How would most people know it was too short? Studies have shown that on average...

A person who has a good experience with a product will recommend it to 3 people.

A person who has a bad experience with a product will tell 10 people not to purchase it.

MadWorld and The Conduit were both new IP's, both were short and have a look at their covers if you don't think they look niche. I can't see how anybody would look at The Conduit's cover and think it was high quality..
