Forums - Gaming - NPD: 170 million gamers in North America, more female than man

Yup, forget "Teh Hardcore" because NPD has a gaming segment division according to the time devoted per week.

For decades, baseball has been called "the American pastime." However, a new report from the NPD Group indicates that a majority of American citizens currently indulge in one common leisure activity--playing games.

NPD's just-released 2009 Gamer Segmentation Report dissects the US gaming market in depth, drawing on responses from nearly 21,000 people taken during a January survey. Using statistical sampling, the study estimates the domestic number of gamers increased by 4.3 million in 2008, going from 165.5 million to 169.9 million. According to the most recent estimate from the Census Bureau, the US population was just over 304 million in July--meaning around 55 percent of Americans play games in one form or another.

The segments are: Extreme Gamers, Avid PC Gamers, Console Gamers, Online PC Gamers, Offline PC Gamers, Young Heavy Gamers,
and Secondary Gamers. Being the last one the biggest of all

I didn't find the part where it said anything indicating that there are more women than men playing.

Interesting info nonetheless.

Is that actually possible?

It will always swing at least 60% in mens favour

Yep I did a mistake in the title, but unfortunally I can't edit it. If some mods can do it, it'd be great. Anyway the complete list (with numbers) is:

"Secondary Gamers" (33.6 million)

"Console Gamers" (32.9 million)

"Heavy Portable Gamers" group (30.0 million)

"Online PC Gamers,"(25.9 millon)

"Avid PC Gamers" (17.3 millon)

"Offline PC Gamers" (24.1 millon)

"Extreme Gamers,": (6.2 millon)

Deleted because this thread really doesn't need my comment.

Actually 20,983 people

Methodology
The report is based on data collected from an online survey fielded in 2009. The sample
included 20,893 respondents from NPD’s online consumer panel. Such a large sample
provides an optimal platform for data analysis. The nationally-representative sample
included males and females ages two to 65+. Responses for two- to 12-year-olds were
captured by surrogate reporting where the female parent/guardian age 21+ was asked
to complete the survey with the child at the computer to answer either with or without
the adult female’s assistance.

Why are portable gamers fat?

What a stupid question. Precisely because they are portable gamers. Others go outside to do sports, but they play games instead. Have you ever tried playing a DS while jogging? It's not great.

What about that step counting software?
