Forums - Sony - Studio Liverpool : SPUs are godsend

So a small developer making a PSN title can make a 60fps game with incredible graphics by utilising the SPUs, and enormous developers like Capcom can't? If Studio Liverpool were to make a retail disc game for PS3, I guarantee you there would be no install, or a 500MB one tops.

It IS developer laziness and nothing else.

In other news, Retro studios says the Wii architecture is "really good", and Rare Software says The Xenos "is a godsend".

Because Metroid Prime and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts are among the best looking and best running games on their respective systems, right?

feel better now ?

No, one more:

Valve says Steam is a "great system for distributing games".

Are you denying the truth of that statement?

Small developer?? Studio Liverpool employs over 100 people, is funded and owned by sony and is the oldest and 2nd largest sony studio.

Capcom employs over 1000 people, is one of the oldest (30 years in May 2009)and most successful game developers/publishers of all time, and made a revenue of nearly US$1 billion last fiscal year. Who has more funding available?

EDIT: Second biggest? Polyphony is bigger, Guerilla is bigger, Santa Monica is bigger, Insomniac (if we count them) is around double the size.

arguably studio liverpool they are OWNED by sony and have every sony technician who made the PS3 to call upon... thats all i am saying.

Fair enough, but not all developers have problems with the PS3. There were no problems with the PS3 versions of BioShock (whatever EuroGamer says), any of the CoD games, GTA4, the majority of multiplats in fact. Capcom stand out as people who just refuse to work with it, their games always have 5GB+ installs, and rarely look anywhere near as good on PS3 (the exception is DMC4 for some reason).

Honestly, all of you guys are in way too deeply. Reasonable said it best, it's a purely technical interview (which I was fortunate enough to read before this thread came along and poured bias all over it), and the comment is justified within the interview.

So, to all the guys shouting at kowenicki, you know he has a point (however misdirected it is in this case), stop acting like it's the end of the world. And to kowenicki and NJ5, it may seem like your typical "teh C3LL is ftw!" developer talk, but it isn't, and so all your comment are quite "missing the point".

^^
I doubt studio liverpool has more funding, but they should indeed have far better technical access.

I'd note that it's important to remember Wipeout HD is an exclusive title, designed from the ground up to support PS3, and as the interview makes clear has been very well optimized accordingly.

I do think Capcom haven't optimized their games as well as they could for PS3, as the full install makes clear, but on the other hand they are producing multiplatform titles, which is a whole different kettle of fish due to the PS3/360 architecture differences.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I'm not shouting at Kowenicki, I'm just pointing out that if a developer can make a downloadable game, which is around 1/3 the size of a Capcom install, run at 60 fps and look brilliant, why can't these massive developers with tens of millions of dollars for a budget do the same? Kowenicki argues that it's because they are a Sony subsidiary, but I pointed out that Rockstar and Infinity Ward aren't Sony subsidiaries, and their games run fine. CoD4 had no install, ran at 60 fps, and was one of the best looking games of the gen when it released.

No, actually I agree with it. I wouldn't take it at face value if Valve said it though.
