http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=29340

And to offer no replacement no 80GB model announced.

Does this mean europe will get a lower grade cosole and no alternative, Sony must bring the 80GB model to Europe surely

I reckon the 80Gb model will appear in Europe.  They will sell 2 versions of the PS3.  40Gb and 80Gb.  And I reckon it will replace the £349 60Gb pricepoint.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Yup, I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I hope your right, I dont have a Hi-Def console yet (althought I do that the TV) just a PS2,Wii DS PSP. so im waiting for a few moew price drops. I do like the idea of having Blue ray.

Will the Xbox come down in price?

Reading this is like a gigantic slap in the face to me. According to Sony the 40Gig model will be the ONLY model available in the future - this applies to Australia as well. I guess they are serious about dropping PS2 support... forever?

"Europe will only have access to 40GB model once stock has sold out

Sony has announced that once the current stock of 60GB PlayStation 3's has sold out, European regions will only have access to the newly introduced 40GB model.

The shock decision comes after Sony Europe announced a price cut for the 60GB model to GBP 349 / EUR 499, which the company said was in response to consumer feedback.

The company also unveiled a 40GB PlayStation 3 due to go on sale this Wednesday, but gave no indication at the time that the 60GB model would be discontinued.

"Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two SKU's announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted the GBP 299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward," said a spokesperson for SCEE

Sony has already phased out the 60GB model in North America, where an 80GB unit sells for USD 599 with a copy of MotorStorm."

...

I only hope this is a temporary measure, and that they do change their minds and release the 80Gig (or other) model in Europe/Australia.

Sony - please listen up: I will never buy a PS3 that does not support PS2 compatibility.

I only hope that consumers vote with their heads, and force Sony to fix this atrocity.

Shams NOT happy :(

All the big 3 Console makers make mistakes in there communications with the press, ut why are Sony so bad at getting it right. They took there foot of the gas and now they dont know how to handle it, or how to say it

@dazmanda

They did a poll, and thats what people wanted.

This is just a way to scare people into buying the 60 GB units while they're available... And then they'll do a Sony-Style-backtrack™ and announce a 80/100/120 GB unit.

In any case, I don't expect the 40 GB to sell any significant numbers for now. The sales spike this week will come mostly from 60 GB units which got a price cut. I mean, the current choice in Europe is:

- 40 GB PS3, not compatible with PS2 games, no card readers and 2 USB ports for 400 €.

- 60 GB PS3, with card readers, 4 USB ports, compatible with PS2 games (not the best BC, but still good), with an extra controller and two fine games (Motorstorm and Resistance) for 500 €

It's pretty obvious that most people will go with the 60 GB! When the bundles with Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 launch, apparently they'll only be available with the 40 GB unit, so that's when the 40 GB unit starts to sell IMO!

LOL did sony trade mark this Sony-Style-backtrack™

but Yes I think your right

Yes I also believe this is a serious trick meant for the EU. America has the 80GB with BC and no rumors are known to be discontinued after the 40GB "might" be introduced. Therefore I'm almost 100% sure, as I've said before, we can expect an announcement about a new SKU, as soon as the 60GB SKU's have been sold out. Still the people who're anxious to get a PS3 with BC and I know many people who would, even though they still have their PS2 consoles, they're running to the stores to get their 60GB PS3 anyway, just in case...

Sneaky Sony, very sneaky :P
