Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 now 70% Cheaper to Produce!

@jede3

Know anything about production costs of the blue-ray discs compared to dvds? How much money Sony is loosing by selling games in blue-ray instead of dvd ?

Trick question. Games have gone up 10 dollars since they used DVD's for the ps2 :) Which... the reason costs have gone up is because of the higher dev costs of games and materials for discs. Anyway, a 3 pack at Best Buy is 28 dollars. That would make it less than 10 dollars a Disc. This also includes retail mark up and you also have to consider... Sony makes these things too. They probablly pay just cost of materials to themselves. How much is that? I don't know. But I can comfortablly say it's less than 9 dollars.

So some people here actually believe that the PS3 only costs $250 to make now?

Considering all evidence supports this conclusion... yes... it's logical to think this. Not everyone is like you and makes numbers up.

What evidence? Nothing has been confirmed, just speculation.

So it's speculation hearing the CEO say "70% reduction" ...never woulda guessed.

70% of what exactly? We don't have any real numbers. Just a few months ago they were still losing $40 per console.

The $250 number.

In support of Slimebeast:

Sony bragged that they had more software developers than Nintendo and Microsoft combined. So the question isn't about whether a particular project is profitable, its about whether the overall division is profitable.

Say for instance, SCE has expenses of 400M in game development per year. That means that they have to sell say 20M games just to break even. (as an example, assuming a % of cost diverted to marketing etc)

Tease.

But squilliam... that is definatly not what slime is trying to say. And if it were. I'd have agreed.

Your logic is very flawed. "Because they were producing Ps3's for 420 dollars in May they can't produce them for 250 in July..." Huh?
