Forums - Sales - Year over Year software sales

People talk about Year over Year hardware sales all the time. I figure that the software sales YoY are close to as interesting.
I decided to put a bit less in here, as when I make a long thread it just kills any chance of a discussion. So; on to the statistics!

Wii: 65.6M
DS: 56.75M
X360: 39.73M
Ps3: 32.03M
PsP: 16.73M

2009 sales:

Wii: 68.92M
DS: 67.68M
X360: 43.62M
Ps3: 33.79M
PsP: 15M

Difference:

Wii: +3.3M (+5%)
DS: +11M (+19.3%)
X360: +3.91M (+9.8%)
Ps3: +1.75M (+5.4%)

Jeez, what about the DS?

The bargain bin gives the Wii and DS a huge advantage.

Your claim is, essentially, that the Wii and DS gets a large advantage because of low priced showelware?

I think you're wrong. You see, Nintendo games drop far slower in price than the games of nearly any other publisher. It's true that may of the other (3rd party) games on Wii (and DS) drop quickly in price, but that's evened out by the Nintendo games. Perhaps more than evened out.

Personally, I suspect that the bargain bins lead to underestimations of all of the system's yearly software sales; and (to a certain extent) this underestimation could hurt the Wii and the DS more than the competition. There are (probably) hundreds of games that (probably) sell between 500 and 5,000 units worldwide on a weekly basis that are (probably) not tracked that well because of where and how they're sold. When you add up all of these units it potentially adds up to millions of units of software sold for each system that is simply untracked.

MGS4 makes the PS3 look bad this year.

There's a mere 2.5 million sold from that title. I don't think you can blame anything on that, as there have been plenty of large releases this year too. If you want to blame something, blame GTA IV.
