Isn't Yakuza basically a Japanese GTA anyway?

I think it's way better described as a JRPG with a Beat'emUp battle system. The reason why it often is associated with GTA is really just for it's setting as an underworld game, for objectively speaking that's already were the similarities stop (apart from the inclusion of several mini-games).

I just realized that there is no open world in Yakuza.

Okay, NOW fuck you, Sega!

They gave us VC...so they're allowed to stay :)

Or to put it another way: They took VC2 away from me, and now this! I think I'm more with Badgenome on this one.

Good move, it would not sell well based on the past games.

@ Riachu )

There is a distric of Tokyo (Kamurocho) "open" to you (and in RGG 2 there are 2 additional districts in Osaka, while in RGG 3 there aparantly is one in Okinawa), but to call it an "open world" is a stretch, because these are pedestrian areas bordered by streets which you can't cross.

maybe if they advertsied it so people knew it actually existed. where i like yakuza 2 is the most expensive ps2 game and there are no used copies of it.

People need to understand that advertising isn't a magical solution, they spent a lot on the first Yakuza and the numbers of the first one are quite similar to the second one  (VG Chartz doesn't even have numbers for NA).

Damn Sega and their good business sense!

Really, they're being smart. Most Americans don't even know who the Yakuza are. More successful criminal games (Godfather, Scarface) have flopped this gen. Why would they want to bring over something far more obscure? Godfather II was a big flop, and it's based off a highly successful film series.

I dunno.

For a while the Yakuza were a big crime thing.  They are always on mainstream shows and crap.

Them or the Tong anyway.

Either way though.... yeah this isn't much of a surprise.

I mean they took years to port the games over last generation... back when the economy was all great and stuff and company's weren't losing their shirts in expensive development and needing to pool resources.

No, they were never well known in the west. In fact, I doubt most Americans could even tell you who the Triads are, much less the Yakuza. Sega is being smart. If they release their game in the west and it sells sub-100k on an HD budget, they are going to lose a ton of money.

Oh, i agree they're likely smart to not bring it over... look at my last sentence.

Though that does bring up an interesting question... would it really be anymore expensive to localize an HD game vs a SD game?

I mean the games already made so development costs aren't an issue.

It would basically be what.. voice acting?   Or even just subtitles?

I guess you'd have to change a few signs into english?   Would it really be substantionally more expensive?
