Forums - Nintendo - The gamecube was in second place not third

The POINT is, Video_Game_Critic is wrong because the GC wasn't a "disaster".

But Graves, you said that the Gamecube having "a strong library with a lot of variety" is "the exact opposite of the N64". Now, Sonic Adventures notwithstanding, I think it's pretty hard to argue that the N64 has NO (or very little) variety compared to the Gamecube, and even harder to argue that its library is weak, what with OOT consistently topping "greatest ever" lists and Mario 64 being held in much higher acclaim than Sunshine, etc. etc. etc.

But if you feel you can defend your claim, by all means go ahead and show us why the N64 library is weak and lacking any sort of variety compared to the Gamecube.

Well I've played plenty of Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. I LOVED Mario Sunshine. Mario 64 was... not bad. I'm also not a Zelda fan, but both of the N64 Zelda games are easily accessible for the Gamecube and then some. The primary reason I purchase a console for is the 3rd party games (unless it was a Sega console). As we all know the N64 wasn't the best console for 3rd party software.

With that said, here are some 3rd party Gamecube games worth mentioning.

Sonic Adventure games
Sonic classic compelations
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcadia
Phantasy Star Online
Capcom vs SNK 2
Def Jam fighting games
Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Mega Man series
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil series
Midway Arcade Treasures series
Need for Speed series
Prince of Persia series
Soul Calibur 2
SSX 3
Rainbow 6 series
Splinter Cell series
Call of Duty series
Tony Hawk series
Viewtiful Joe series
X-Men Legends series

N64 wasn't bad, but there was a lot more fun to be had with the Gamecube.

^ Gamecube had the exact same reputation and then some.

I don't feel like teh list warz but I'd like to remind you that Rare was still in Nintendo's corner:
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Diddy Kong Racing
Donkey Kong 64
Jet Force Gemini
Conker's Bad Fur Day

Also, N64 ports on the GC don't count for GC variety.

Yeah, I hate Rare games. Killer Instinct Gold was great though, I'm surprised you didn't mention that.

Those N64 games were innovative for their time, but not exactly great in my opinion. Put nostalgia aside.

@everyone saying "GAMECUBE MADE THE MOST PROFIT!", no, that was more to do with the GameBoy Advance than anything else. If the PS2 made $10 profit on each console and the GameCube made $50, the PS2 still would have made more profit than the GC overall.

Never played KI Gold, though I've heard of it, of course, which is probably why I forgot it. If you like fighter games I can see why you'd prefer the GC; I don't recall too many for the N64 while the GC gets Soul Calibur II!

For your latter comment, are you now saying the GC wins simply by being less outdated?
(To respond directly, they may have aged but many are still "great" regardless of "for their time" considerations or nostalgia goggles. If we're talking about just your opinion, on the other hand, debate is obviously pointless.)

Well many of these games you consider "great" don't hold up very well.

Personally I think the adventure games and shooters were better on the Gamecube. And just about every other genre was stronger on the Gamecube. Its not just graphics a issue, its a different gen, the benchmark was raised, and it had much more 3rd party support.

I don't think anyone in this thread said the GC made more money than the PS2.

But Sony's business model is horrendous, and they blew away all their profits with the release of PS3, which is still losing money.

So tallying up all the years of playstation profits, they are below the gamecube.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 both have yet to make a net profit this generation. Does that mean they're tied for 3rd behind the Wii? I'm not disagreeing with your logic, but rather making sure you apply it to all situations. If we take this one step further, then the Wii won this generation before it even launched, because Nintendo makes so much profit per HW unit sold that MS and Sony could conceivably outsell the Wii by a large margin and still make less profit.

Hardware is only a means to enjoy great games!

I didn't say they ALL aged well. And I'd fight you on the 3rd party support claim (as well as the genre claim, although certainly the 64 was devoid of JRPGs) if I had time to do the research.  All I have at my fingertips are recollections about tons of bitching that the GC was "even worse" than the N64 in that respect.
