Forums - Nintendo - Let's talk about the possibility of a Wii price cut.

When? If the Christmas season isn't as good as expected and New Super Mario and Wii Sports Resort cannot move more units, probably next year then.

$199 seems a rational price. Still, I don't see it happening, not this year at least.

I find it revealing that the Wii's moving easily over 300k units in its third June, and yet we talk as if the Wii is in serious trouble.

HD Wii, it's coming!

Always good to hear what people think, anyway.

No even thought it percentage dropped the most, it's still the best selling console. I would buy on if it was $149.99. It's not worth it at the current price imo.

Now that's where we disagree.

I think we see the Wii bundled with Wii Sports Resort and WM+ before we see a price cut, but that's just me.

I think the odds of Nintendo doing something (or potentially many small things) to shift the price to value ratio of the Wii to a different position are pretty good this holiday season are pretty good ...

Now, if I was Nintendo what I would (probably) do is sell the Wii, 2 Wiimotes, 2 Nunchucks, Wii Sports and give people the choice of one of 4 first party titles from its first year on the market and sell it for $200. The reason for this is simple, with more and more people who are worried about their finances, the demand for a product that a parent can buy for $200 and put under the tree and make multiple children very happy is huge right now; and even after christmas, many people will want to splurge on some "big" purchases and not feel (that) guilty after.

Hmm Not this year. Nintendo might cut the price After Xmas.

Exactly, and with Nintendo making a massive profit on each unit sold, why would they cut the hardware price? Honestly I don't expect them to cut their hardware price till 2011. If they do have a price cut next year it will be because Sony drops the PS3 to 199$-250$ making the Wii the most expensive console on the market. However Sony says a price cut is not in the works and is even defying Activision's call for a price cut.

In other words expect a cut around holiday 2011!

I don't know ...

Nintendo has been successful on a level far beyond what they expected, and maybe even further than they dreamed, with both the Nintendo DS and the Wii. I can't help but think that Nintendo is going to move into a very "Defensive" stance to ensure that they continue to be dominant in both the handheld and home console markets leading into the next generation; at that point they can try to "Fuse" their dominance in both markets to lock people into Nintendo, and push to become more dominant in the entire gaming market.

If Nintendo has done (or will do) any cost-cutting measures to the Wii's hardware production there may be lots of room to reduce the price of the Wii while still selling the hardware at a decent profit.

I don't think we can make a prediction right now.. I'm quite sure that we won't see a price cut this year though.. Nintendo believes that it's the lack of titles in the first half of 09 that has made Wii sales slow and I agree. To see the results of the WSR, WF+, NSMBWii trifecta will mean looking at sales not just in the next few months but well into next year.

If sales come back up after those three titles to 2008 levels then we won't see a price cut next year, if they come to above 2009 levels but less than 2008 levels then we will see one in Q3/Q4 next year but if sales are down next year on 2008 levels then I expect a price cut for early April.

Of course if WSR doesn't move hardware and Wii continues to fall then I don't think they'll sit around waiting to see if WF+ and NSMBWii will lift Wii back up, I'm sure they'll have bundles or Black Wii's in stores for the holiday season. Nintendo have the following list of system selling software over the next year and a half:

- Wii Sports
- Wii Sports Resort
- Wii Fit (will be discontinued at the launch of Wii Fit Plus)
- Wii Fit Plus
- Mario Kart Wii
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Wii Vitality
- Super Mario Galaxy 2
- Metroid: Other M

So the last two won't raise sales too much but they will bolster the consoles position. Nintendo will have more surprises beyond those titles but they do have a nice list there.
