Forums - Gaming - Why do games like Gears and Kill.Switch get credit for inventing cover...

i had this game, its pretty sweet , you feel like a cop and earn badges and solve crimes.
the cover system is NOT something that the game shines on though, it really more of a puzzle game than an action game, if anyone played No More Heroes , this is exactly like it.

open world, "Headhunting" also you have your HQ, you get ranked, train on VR , challenge others and you earn licenses to kill

they need to make more games like this.

...system?

There was an amazing game called Headhunter on the Dreamcast <snip>

That's really about as far as I needed to read to know the answer to your question.

@PullusPardus
The game was amazing yes...I guess you are right in saying its structured like No more heroes...but gameplay is nothing alike. Its more Resident Evil and MGS...

While there was driving like you pointed out, and VR missions for training, those elements are maybe 30% of the game. Especially after you get to know the city...it takes 30 seconds to drive over to the next mission which last 15-20 minutes.

And I disagree with you that the cover system isn't used much. While its not the core element around which everything revolves around, it is an essential feature of combat which is the major part of the game. I beat the game, and later levels on the boat or in the mansion have no VR or motorcycle elements and are all gunfights. There is no health regen and you take 6-7 bullets, you die...so you better cover up.

Did you run out of room on the thread title line?

Winback, N64, 1999. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz4oNZqw9eA (skip to about 0:30).

Kill.Switch is still significant because it introduced blind-fire, which I don't think Winback and Headhunter have (I've played both, but don't remember).

Damn...I never played this game but it looks like you are right. You are also right in saying that you couldn't blind fire in headhunter. I don't know about Winback but the reason why I made this thread is because I fired up the dreamcast and played a few games yesterday...

While playing headhunter I realized that I was playing it exacly like I would Gears of War...roll, cover, fire, roll...etc

what are you talking about.

u have to cover bowser in mario 1, and then he jump pass fast and cut the bridge. =P

i never actually give credit to gears to it covers system. i find it simple require tons of walls to stick in the whole game, liked uncharted that u can push tables and turn then into covers.

but all this it's just a follow up of an old idea. and no one can patent.

There are hospital beds and tables that you can flip over and use as cover on Gears 2. You crouch against them and your character flips them over.

Didn't Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 have a cover system?

Gears, etc. get the credit because they happened to be successful at the right time and got associated with the mechanic.

Also, most people simply aren't interested in whether someone else thought of something first, they just go with the flow of common opinion. Sad, but that's the masses for you.

I suspect that in most cases you could take any game mechanic and find an earlier, little known use of the same mechanic.

It's just the - unfair - way it goes.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
