Forums - Gaming - Why do games like Gears and Kill.Switch get credit for inventing cover...

...system?

There was an amazing game called Headhunter on the Dreamcast (and later ported to PS2) back in 2001 that was quite ahead of its time. It was a mix of Metal Gear Solid, Resident evil, GTA3 and action games like Uncharted and Gears that were never seen back then. It was one of the best games at the time of release...hell even IGN gave it 9/10. http://dreamcast.ign.com/articles/163/163236p1.html

Sadly it was missed by pretty much everyone due to lack of attention because of the gaming mediocrity called the PS2 that dominated in 2001.

I know that Gears supposedly "perected" the cover system...and that people say Kill.switch was the first to implement it in the game however those people are wrong... watch the video below...the battle from 1:10 to 1:25...and later on as well.

This game had a cover system implemented exactly how we know it today...push button and character sticks to wall or object near by.

The more you know...

Because Headhunter was even more obscure than Kill Switch.

Because like u said all the gaming attention was directed at the PS2.

Off topic: that game looks fucking sick. i think im gonna go to ebay and try and find a copy

Long Live SHIO!

This game obviously wasn't a commercial success, and there's nothing to indicate that the cover system was a big part of gameplay. Even if it featured this, it means nothing if it's just a passive feature. I haven't played Kill.Switch, but Gears has an almost perfect cover system, and it's the focus of the game.

The PS2 was not mediocre, it just so happened that it was the most popular console at the time and Sega couldn't keep up. Sony made one of the greatest consoles ever (the PS1), and its sequel did well. Sega made a console that disappointed on so many levels, and its sequel suffered. Sega killed Sega, Sony shouldn't be blamed for being a competitor. I hate when people let their fanboyism take over and say things like that.

@ Montana:

I agree with what you said in your first paragraph (second too, haha), but I just don't think it's the point of the thread. You have to admit that a lot of people did say that Epic first introduced cover systems with Gears. First of all, these people are wrong because Kill.Switch did it before Gears, and second here comes this game...!

I'm confuzzled. :/

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

what are you talking about.

u have to cover bowser in mario 1, and then he jump pass fast and cut the bridge. =P

i never actually give credit to gears to it covers system. i find it simple require tons of walls to stick in the whole game, liked uncharted that u can push tables and turn then into covers.

but all this it's just a follow up of an old idea. and no one can patent.

gears of war just has a really easy to use cover system. its the best cover system i've seen at least.

Im sorry...but had you played headhunter you'd know that cover is the vital part of gameplay. it is not used as in Gears(hide behind rock till you shoot everything) but instead it is used as a stealth tool and for when the firefight gets intense. Worse of all...the game has a roll feature...cover and roll, wasn't that the #1 innovation that Gears gets credit for. Don't get me wrong, I own both gears gamesand like them very much, but its sad when a game and its features get overlooked in history by pretty much everyone...no matter how rare it is.

Also, in 2001 PS2 was mediocre...it was an amazing console overall when everything was said and done, but a 2000 and 2001 gamer was much happier with the dreamcast than ps2.

If you try it the game will blow you away...Im not kidding. Story is great, action is intense, visuals are great for the day and still pretty good today, boss batles are mindblowing, it has some hillarious scenes involving a news broadcasters telling you about the latest crime news and its 12-14 hours long...To this day this game has more gamplay variety than most games that come out and get 8.5 on metacritic.

If you own a PS2 I suggest visiting gamestop and picking up the PS2 version. It should be 5 bucks used and it has quicker load times.

If you own a Dreamcast I suggest downlaoding the game off the web. Your dreamcast should be able to play burned CD's without any modchip...

Also dont bother with a sequel...Headhunter Redemption came out on PS2 and Xbox in 2003 and it was terrible. Sega cut half the staff that made the first game for the sequel and shut the studio down after the game was a flop.
