I would strongly recommend Final Fantasy IV. I think it's the strongest in the series when it comes to storytelling.

SPOILERS IN LINK - Kasz, RubangB and I discussed it just a few months back. Rarely in a video game, are story, theme and character so masterfully woven together as they are in FFIV.

FFIV is widely regarded as one of, if not the, best in the series. FFIII, not so much... and not just in the western world. On a personal level, FFIII is the only mainline FF game I was unmotivated to finish, while FFIV is my favourite in the series.

Edit: Also, in terms of music, FFIV easily wins. It contains some of the greatest themes and songs in the series.

FF3 is amazing. I haven't played FF4 myself, but I honestly have only heard bad things about it ...

Play III before IV, i completed III but stopped playing IV after an hour (that wasn't my game)!

FFIII had a tremendous difficulty jump for the very end of the game, making it one of the few games i've completely abandoned out of frustration.

Just get FFVI advance.

Easily the best FF in the entire series and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

I just wanted to make it clear that VI is better than III and IV.


I should have also stated which game I would have started with out of the 2 he now owns. In that case, FFIV all the way.
