SO4 is in the bottom of the list for me. It's better than Til End of Time, I'll give it that - if that's saying something.

I've been playing the remakes (or port in the case of SO2) and I don't think SO2 is that great really... I enjoyed SO1 more. *Shrugs* No nostalgia factor maybe?
@ OP, Yeah, I've seen the new prices and I'm considering Blue Dragon... I like old styled RPGs so I'm pretty sure I'd like this.
Man here is my list:
P4 > P3 FES > ToV > BD > SO4 > LO > ES > IU > EA > TLR
Notice how I included both Persona 4 and Persona 3 in there, which should retail for $30 and $15 respectively. And most everybody has a PS2, so ...
But really I think buying IU/EA/TLR/ES at any price is probably a mistake. SO4 is probably okay at a cheaper price if you enjoy the combat system, BD at $10 I think is really good, but the other are iffy. $30 is decently cheap but LO should still go down and for PS3 owners they can probably wait for a superior version of ToV.
Man, this gen really is pretty wretched for jRPGs.
Blue Dragon is a great game, but the achievements are extremely hard and not worth it.
Infinite Undiscovery is brilliant, great original story 9/10.
Lost Odyssey is great, although i gave up at the last boss on the 3rd disc.
Enchanted Arms is only worth $10 and takes a lot of patience, extremely hard, though 8/10.

IU -> 20£ New -- barely touched :/ (was ok for the 1H I spent on it)
BD -> 15£ New -- in wrapper
ES -> 6£ New -- playing in coop with my GF so slowly... I like it it's nice and pretty refreshing.
F2 -> 17£ New -- in wrapper but bough Knothole on sale :p
rest... i'll consider once I finished my PS2/GC/DS back catalog of RPGs...

Well, I haven't played enough of SO3, but SO4 is certainly worse than SO1 and SO2.

Seriously though, my guess is that the majority of Star Ocean fans who have been with the series since the beginning will probably say that SO2 is the best game in the series. This is just my opinion, but 3 and 4 are not even in the same league as 2.
