Well the figures here are in line with NPD, GfK and Famitsu... so I guess they are all wrong too then???

Doubt it.

You can't purely go off shipping figures.

Are you suggesting that there was no stock at the start of the shipping period mentioned?  Clearly there would have been stock already in the system, to which you add these shipped figures....

It really isnt that complicated.

Thats actually incorrect - you can.

Shipping figures DIRECTLY correlate to consumer sales due to limitations put on inventory levels throughout the channel.

Take this quarters figures. Microsoft are down in shipments 1.3mill to 1.2mill YoY after being well up YoY in Q3. This is due to falling demand from retail due to oversupply in the previous quarter and adjusted inventory levels. As quarterly shipment order numbers to retail are estimated in the previous quarter, it means demand this quarter at the retail level has slowed. Unless inventory levels have been drastically changed uniformly, it means consumer demand has therefore slowed.

Shipping figures (and more importantly their changes) show much more than you think.

I would suggest an overtracking of about 500-700k is about the right level.

I'd be interested to see Sony's shipment numbers this quarter, to see if they channel stuffed in Q1 to meet their 10 mill target.
