Forums - Nintendo - How "hardcore" were the N64 and Gamecube?

Hardcore games= realistic looking games, with high gore and violence, explicit language, complex controls, long hours for completion, online multiplayer support, *if the game is actually good then some of those requirements may be waived.

Casual games= colorful games, non violent, non realistic graphics, bland language, simple controls, short/quick games, local multiplayer, no/limited online, *if the game is actually good then it is still casual.

Hardcore games that bomb: ignored but still hardcore/labeled as poorly made/niche

Casual games that bomb: shovelware

This is a typical example of the misconceptions about what is "hardcore" and what is not. First of all, realistic graphics certainly don't = hardcore. Games with high gore and explicit language often attract the most juvenile of gamers. They almost certainly don't = hardcore either. Just because a game is colourful doesn't mean it's casual or indeed can't be played in a hardcore manner. Also, tell me why a non-violent game can't be hardcore? Bland language doesn't necessarily make a game casual either. Tetris has no language in it at all. So is that casual then? Your whole post looks like a thinly-veiled and misguided attack on the Wii for being casual whilst making it look like all HD games are "hardcore". At best your post is misguided and stereotypical . At worst it's ..... full of FAIL!

LOL, sorry you didn't catch my sarcasm.  I was being purposely typical to prove that those definitions are made by a typical adolecent fanboy who has no clue.

OP: In my opinion they were every bit as hardcore as the competition and certainly a lot more so than the Wii.

Oh. Sorry. Should have checked in your profile first before replying to your post. Your sarcasm was spot on, though wasn't it? As that was just the impression you gave! You certainly had me fooled!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

More hardcore than the Wii, thats for certain.

Suppose something could be too "hardcore" for the mass market but i have to say i was disappointed with the N64's sales particularly because it was an AMAZING console which gave me hours and hours of fond memories......

Well what I consider hardcore is support of all of Nintendo's franchises. I think a hardcore game is one with title recognition. As such the GameCube is the most hardcore Nintendo platform to date. It had nearly one instalment for every one of Nintendo's franchises. I bought 35 GCN games over its life cycle and most of them were first party titles that many would argue are hardcore.

I think the Wii lacks hardcore, mainly because of all the new franchises and the over rated tech demo's. Rather then Nintendo supporting existing properties like Donkey Kong, StarFox etc...etc... they choose to develope countless Wii tech demo's!

I for one am boycotting WiiSportsResort for that very reason, I'm sick of all the tech demo's!

Hardcore enough to get some downright excellent exclsuives that are still very much adored today...

I am trying -- and failing -- to think of third-party exclusives that fit that definition.

I am trying -- and failing -- to see where Xen used the phrase "third-party" in his post.

PS:  Ogre Battle 64.

Xen did not use third-party.

However, given that first and second party games are going to appear on the Nintendo console regardless of how it is perceived outside of Nintendo, I thought I would pose the question that way. (Rare was an exclusive Nintendo developer at the time of the N64).

And WoW is right about Ogre Battle 64. I played that for 70+ hours, only to find that my reputation was so poor that I could not be allowed to remain in the kingdom after I liberated it.

The ps2 was the console for everyone- hence the sales lapping the other systems 5 times over :p
