You're right. It's a good thing that those games are also hardcore

n64 was nintendo best ever console.

mario kart didn't have the ·"$"·$ blue winged blue shell.

it have 2 high quality zelda. and the second even had better graphics!.
and mario 64 wasn't so tonned down like galaxy, but the bosses were repetitive my only grip.

Listing any number of games is no proof the PS1 was more hardcore than the N64.

ps1 was known for it's complex games that's all I can say

Hardcore games= realistic looking games, with high gore and violence, explicit language, complex controls, long hours for completion, online multiplayer support, *if the game is actually good then some of those requirements may be waived.

Casual games= colorful games, non violent, non realistic graphics, bland language, simple controls, short/quick games, local multiplayer, no/limited online, *if the game is actually good then it is still casual.

Hardcore games that bomb: ignored but still hardcore/labeled as poorly made/niche

The PS1 was known for massive boatloads of shovelware, and easy games full of FMV ...

While people do not consider them quite as impressive as they once did, there are reasons why the best N64 games are still considered to be "good" by today's standards; and most people who go back to re-experience Playstation games on their Playstation (if it still works) find them unplayable.

Just like there are people who find old N64 games unplayable.

It's all a PR thing. GameCube and N64 weren't hardcore because Nintendo lost the PR wars of those days, so the definition slid to disclude them.

This is a typical example of the misconceptions about what is "hardcore" and what is not. First of all, realistic graphics certainly don't = hardcore. Games with high gore and explicit language often attract the most juvenile of gamers. They almost certainly don't = hardcore either. Just because a game is colourful doesn't mean it's casual or indeed can't be played in a hardcore manner. Also, tell me why a non-violent game can't be hardcore? Bland language doesn't necessarily make a game casual either. Tetris has no language in it at all. So is that casual then? Your whole post looks like a thinly-veiled and misguided attack on the Wii for being casual whilst making it look like all HD games are "hardcore". At best your post is misguided and stereotypical . At worst it's ..... full of FAIL! 

N64 had a lot of hardcore titles.  Games like Ogre Battle 64, Starcraft 64, Command & Conquer, and the Rogue Squadron games were excellent 'core' games.
