Forums - Sony - Hybrid Blu-Ray Discs a Joke?

Soo.. Hybrid Blu-Ray was just more PR talk like: "This is whats to come in a few months",  a few months pass:  "just kidding"

Wait, what? Watchmen game-plus-movie hybrid Blu-ray comes on two discs

In February it was revealed that Sony was working on making game-plus-movie hybrid Blu-ray discs. A great idea that appeals to something movie-goers and gamers share -- an inherent laziness. The first game to feature this was to be Warner Bros' comic book masterpiece, Watchmen, which includes the downloadable game Watchmen: The End Is Nigh on the disc.

Well, on a disc, at least. The game and the movie are on separate discs which sort of renders the entire process pointless. Whoops! Still, at least you get the game and the director's cut for for $50. Plus, now you can throw away your copy of The End Is Nigh once you realize how bad it is, without parting with your copy of the movie. Still, bit of an epic fail all around, really.

Sony: PS3-focused 'movie plus game' Blu-ray Discs coming this year

In news of "Why didn't someone think of this sooner?" nature, SCEA hardware marketing manager, John Koller, has revealed that Sony is working on hybrid Blu-ray movie releases containing playable PS3 games. In an interview with Video Business, Koller said that the first such BD offerings will hit the market during 2009.

"The way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc," Koller said, citing the fact that "a lot of developers" working on movie tie-in games have expressed interest in the concept. "We will definitely see this stuff this year," he confirmed. Sony isn't talking partnerships yet, but Koller did reveal that two to three of these movie/game mashups will be released this calendar year.

Warner Bros Interactive told us late last year that it is extremely interested in the notion of BD movies including playable content. In fact, a rep for the publisher mentioned that, had the timing been better, a demo of the upcoming Wanted: Weapons of Fate could have been included with the film's Blu-ray release.

We're not sure who will reap more rewards from this news: gamers or marketing departments.

What the hell does that achieve? They could have used two DVDs!

Oh, wow.

And here I thought it was a really cool idea, even though the games are seriously mediocre. I still think Ghostbusters was a missed opportunity!

Yea definately the Ghostbusters movie & game combo wouldve been nice.

They can do that with others that would feel more appealing and could be cheaper too.  Like the Street Fighter movie with that Street Fighter movie game (sure they suck but at least it looks more appealing), Mortal Kombat blu-ray with like MK1-3 on the disc etc.

It would be more appealing.
