Forums - Sony - Folklore seems like a mixed bag

Honestly, I take every PS3 game review with a grain of salt. I really believe that if Heavenly Sword were released on the 360, it would have gotten a 9.2+ average.

Granted, this may be because Sony isn't as "nice" to reviewers as MS. But still.

I agree. I almost passed on Heavenly Sword because of the 7 average reviews. Then I decided to get it anyway and it's freaking awesome. I love it when I get good surprises like that :)

It's at least an 8.5-9 for me. But again, HS uses motion control (some levels and some combos) and I guess reviewers really hate that.

The US launch trailer is out, and it looks amazing.

About the time I stopped trusting reviews was when PSM gave Shinobi for PS2 a low 7 and devoted about 5 sentences to it. That game was fun as hell.

Ya. The game has a average of 7.7 now.

I'd expect 35-40k for first week. 150k LTD in America would be good.

Do note that I'm not a fan of RPG's, especially not western RPG's, but this RPG is the best one I've played since FF7(still not as good as FF7, though, but what RPG is?).

First off, Folklore is not a Western RPG. Dunno if you knew that but your comment about WRPGs kinda threw me off.

Secondly, around here you're asking for trouble if you say FFVII is the greatest RPG ever. Expect the frothing mouth-breathers to climb out from under their rocks any minute now.

I know Folklore isn't anywhere near being a WRPG, I just threw that "especially not western RPG's" for spite. Sorry for the confusion.

As far as my comment on FF7, I stand by it. If the community wishes to flame, then so be it. I'll be playing Folklore while not giving a care in the world for them. ;)

Advice to Sony fans from a Nintendo fan:

Never take reviews as gospel. The game journalism business is corrupt and a lot of payola goes on to hype up or hype down certain games. Sometimes they're legit but even if they are, all a review is is one person's opinion on a game. That opinion may not be yours.

Don't get sucked by the tyranny of their numbers. Check the game's concept and test it out for yourself.

Use a review as a guide to purchase never a mandate.

They rated Wii Play low and that's one of the funnest games in my Wii library.

In the end, MY review is the only one that counts. You all should feel the same. YOUR review is the only one that counts.

John Lucas

"Use a review as a guide to purchase never a mandate." Very well put.

That's why I like to base some purchases/rentals/time of/on games on the written part of reviews. The IGN review is fairly elaborate and never left me wondering. Scores are just different these days. I remember a 7/10 was a good score back in the PS1 days, now 7 is a "meh" score to the majority...

IGN gave it a 9/10 and I bought it, id give it a 9.3/10.. actually i might review it myself once I beat it. I only played Keats and Ellen's prologue parts.

My friend bought it and we played more. I played Ellen's prologue and I still really like it. Again, the gameplay isn't the best in the genre or anything but it's satisfactory and moves along the great art, music, and story. For some reason this game reminds me of psychonaughts. Not because it's similar in style or gameplay, but because it's getting hit hard for it's gameplay in reviews even though it is still a really interesting and fun game in other ways. Some games are worth playing just for their plot and art. At least to me.
