This thread is for those who are saddened at the recent news that PS3 will (may?) not be getting the sequel to the amazing Valkyria Chronicles.
I've only owned the game for 3 weeks (same length of time I've owned my PS3) but it is the ONLY game I've played so far out of the 8 I have (my kids love playing LBP and I enjoy watching them play it). My brother, who is too poor to buy any gaming console (even a DSlite) played the heck out of it when I took my PS3 on the road and went to Raglan to see my folks for a week (Squill will know all about Raglan I'm sure). And he is much more of an action/adventure (think God of War and Assassin's Creed) kind of guy. Even my nephew who is visiting started playing it, in between LBP sessions.
I love this game like I've loved no other game: love the animation style, love the characters, love the voice acting, love the gameplay, don't love that stupid porcavian "Moioink!!!" WTF!?!
I don't do handheld consoles. Don't like 'em, never will, would not enjoy playing VC2 on PSP regardless of how good it is. I gave the PSP Ratchet and clank a go, I hated it, but I loved playing all the R&C titles on PS2. Therefore VC2 on PSP only is more dead to me than VC2 on 360 or Wii only. There is a possibility I could one day get a 360 or Wii. There is simply no chance of me getting a PSP.
I don't have any gripes about potential quality issues for VC2 on PSP, I've seen some PSP games and they look good. So I'm sure Sega can do credit to the original vision. I don't begrudge the sequel going to PSP, so please don't look on this as hitting out at PSP, or Sega for putting this on PSP. I'm happy for this to go to PSP, but only if PS3 gets it too. Or if PS3 gets a VC sequel of it's own. If GT can do a PSP and a PS3 then why not VC? OK bad comparison since GT will sell millions on PS3.
Which leads on to my second point. Is this a bad sign for PS3 and third party development of niche games? Sega obviously see the VC franchise as only appealing to a small % of gamers because that is supported by sales figures to date. So they need to put the game on systems that have a big enough base for that small % to lead to profit making sales numbers. They also see that the game is a virtual non-entity outside Japan, which is an indictment on the taste of non-Japanese gamers. Therefore the business case for staying PS3 exclusive is poor indeed. Whereas if Sega is somehow bound to remain exclusive to Sony for this franchise for the time being then going solely PSP is a good strategy. We can thank/blame the fairly poor uptake of PS3 in Japan for this. Had PS3 sales been even 60% of Wii sales in Japan I don't think we'd be having PSP exclusive VC2 articles and threads being posted.
However, I do hold a glimmer of hope that PS3 will see another VC game: if some translated/interpreted information in the "VC2 to be on PSP" thread is correct, in that the interview indicates that Sega are still considering further VC games on systems other than PSP. Please let it be so, and let it be PS3.
