Forums - Sales - digital distribution’s “neither as big nor as significant” as consoles

i really like DD but i strongly agree with the part about "“Amazon-like recommendation engine". it's been quite a while since i was on xbl but on psn most of the games have about zero information about them provided and i'm forced to use other sources like vgchartz/gametrailers to figure out what i want to buy. that's okay for me but not the mainstream.

This feature is coming on XBL. It is a common thing in the retail/media industry nowadays.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Not being able to resell DLC inflates the price.

If buy a $60 game, but can resell it used for $20, your "new" game only cost $40.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

DLC is the one sure fire way developers have of generating revenue off of used game sales. Otherwise they don't see a penny on them.

While I realize there are plenty of gamers out there who don't give a cent whether the developers or publishers get their cut for the years of work they do, it's a bit disingenuous to complain when they sell additional content down the line to get people to keep playing their game and presumably not sell it after two weeks.

Use game sales don't count for a developer's bottom line.

If the whole $60 game as an "investment" is something some still have issue with, try renting, GameFly or just buying that same game months later when it's on sale for a lot less.

I just want the physical copy. What happens if your hard drive shits the bed? Can you re-download those games without charge if you have a proof of purchase of some sort?

Well thats the good thing with Steam, but who knows in the long run for PSN or XBLA... or WiiWare?

Right now you can re-download all of your copies you purchased as long as you can log into your account via lost password, or even get back into it if someone steals your information.

However, right now theres no current promise that XBLA titles will work on the XBox 2, and WiiWare on Wii HD, etc. or if they'll play a cruel joke and make everyone re-buy titles.

Granted I think they will rehash some titles by just adding extra features and charging the original price you paid for them years ago.

It's just that simple.

That sounds good that Steam allows you to go back and get lost games if needed. If the gaming studios want people on board with DD, I think that is a must.

Steam is infinite as far as I know, and the PC (unlike consoles) has that advantage in the system is always the same and what not (just a new OS, but a PC is still a PC) where as we don't know if the XBox 720 will run on the same hardware.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe XBLA all runs on the same software/emulator, so It should be as easy as putting that emulator on the 720 and Microsoft having access to your old purchases to allow you to re-download games.

I guess we won't know for sure till the next XBox is out. I doubt MS/Nintendo/Sony would be willing to piss everyone off by making everyone re-purchase, because that would be a heavy thread to any support for DD.

MS announced today in a press release some of the features for the August NXE update. A rating system for games in the marketplace is one of them
