Forums - Gaming - How Similar Is Disgaea 3 to Final Fantasy Tactics A2?

The first game I bought for my DS lite was Final Fantasy Tacics A2 and since I started it I can't stop!

Lately I've been playing my DS more then my PS3 because of it.

Disgaea seems to be a similar style of game but for the PS3.

Can anyone who's played both let me know how they compare to each other?

Btw, I've played Valkyria Chronicles and think it's one of the best games on PS3 right now.

I haven't played either of these two games, but I've played their predecessors, and I assume that gameplay is largely unchanged between versions.

They're quite similar in that they're grid-based SRPGs, but beyond that there isn't much similarity. Disgaea will most likely have a more fun story, but you might not see much of it because you'll be busy grinding your ass off. If you don't mind grinding, Disgaea is a great big pit waiting to get filled with your time. Disgaea also has combo attacks when you align allies in certain patterns and crazy geo effects which complicate the battlefield. My beef with Disgaea is the grinding, which I am sick of, and how hard it is to level healers.

If you have a DS Lite, I strongly recommend you look into getting one of the GBA Fire Emblem games (the DS FE, Shadow Dragon, isn't as fun, but you might want to try it if you have a DSi with no GBA port). I've also found Valkyrie Profile to be a very fun SRPG on the DS and I'd recommend it over Shadow Dragon, too.

Shadow Dragon is a superb DS game.  It holds true with what makes the series fun but the story is the weakest of those released outside of Japan.  While I love Fire Emblem(7 in Japan), I would recommend Shadow Dragon over the Sacred Stones.

Other than that, I agree with what famousringo has said.

Pixel Art can be fun.

The differences are pretty huge. I haven't played the original tactics in a while thought. I haven't picked up the A2 yet. But if you're looking for a heavier focus on addictive gameplay and a more comedy focused story, you'll love Disgaea. Gameplay wise Disgaea3 is the best of the series, so many options and ways to play. The lasting appeal is huge.

You may have heard alot of about grinding being a huge thing in disgaea. It's made alot easier to handle and raise more characters [also team attacks] at once in Dis3 with the new club system and class room system. If I were to go in depth this would be a pretty long post. PM or post on my wall if you wanna know more.

Disgaea 3 is much much better than Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics A2 when it comes to gameplay.

FF is your standard grid based SRPG where you move your characters a specific amount of spaces and then use attacks and/or magic spells.

In Disgaea 3 you get the same exact things only you also have combo attacks, attacks where certain characters can merge together to create something entirely different, lifting and throwing of teammates to get over enemies and/or walls or to reach higher platforms, toss a Prinny so it explodes , 100+ characters to create and have join your ranks, tons of awesome DLC too like an additional 4 chapters just for Raspberyl.

If you want an SJRPG, Disgaea would be the first series that I would suggest. Leaps and bounds over all other possible titles IMO.

Come on now, any game where someone can cook a gigantic egg dish and place it on top of another character's head without him even noticing is automatic WIN.

"BOOM"

What do you mean by grinding?

Do you mean you have to do all the side quests, or is there some invisible random encounter mechanic that you need to repeat over and over?

You can also play Disgaea on the DS and/or PSP.

I saw a Disgaea 2 coming out for PSP in Sept, and was thinking about waiting for the PSP GO and getting that or another SRPG.

Would it be better to start with Disgaea 1 or does it matter?

Grinding, in a nutshell, is killing the same adversaries over and over until you're at a desired level
