Forums - Sales Discussion - Would a PS3 price cut do it?

TheSource said: Not in Japan, because it is already cheaper than in the US (and will be cheaper than in Europe). I think PS3 would outsell the 360 in the USA/Europe if it was the same price...but it isn't, and I don't think it will be. PS3 can do 500,000/month at the prices it is at worldwide (once it comes out in Europe). Once it goes down $100 in the US/Eur, I think the PS3 does like 650,000/month.
Well consider 2 things. 1 it costs 420 bucks in Japan for the 20GB, the 60GB still costs 600 bucks, and 2 they hardly make any 20GBs (which is a mistake IMO how many people really need Wifi, more hard drive space, and memory card readers?), most retail stores even in Japan only carry the 60GB.

But I'm sure there will be more people that will go and buy it at that new price. How many people? Nothing compared (in my opinion) to the sales that everyone here is looking for. They need more good games and more people with HDTVs. By the way, wiche one will you chose? a 360 w/HD-DVD (Zephyr) or a PS3 (at the same price) ?
Well as I pointed out on another thread. I would buy the 500 dollar PS3, which is cheaper than the equivalent 400 dollar 360 + 200 dollar HD-DVD add on. In 2006 more than 50% of all TVs sold in America were HDTVs. So it's already broken that barrier and will probably achieve close to 100% current market sells within then next few years. It won't sell like the PS2 for a long time, but I think it can actually have a longer life cycle than the PS2 did.

Removal of the emotion chip? That sounds important....what does it do?

Would you buy the PS3 at 100 bucks less? Well, I wold not, but you can be certain, that there would be some other people who would think differently about it. The problem: I am not so sure if Sony could get support from its banks for such a move. It would probably not be as significant as the current price drop of the Xbox 360. For 300 Euro you find much more people willing to buy, than for 500 Euro for a PS-3. FOr 250 - 200 EUro you would probably reach the borderline for several casual gamers, but this would still be a long way. Even the normal price of 400 Euro for the Xbox 360 was a bit high, but if you ask in the 500 to 600 Euro range you could rephrase the question: Do you want a BluRay Player now? For people who answer yes, the price drop from 600 Euro (798 $) to 500 Euro (665 $) would probably not be so significant.
1) 360 hasn't price dropped yet and hasn't even announced an intention beyond doing it sometime in 2007. They haven't even said they will drop the price when their new SKU comes out. 2) Sony as a company is profitable, has a low debt to equity ratio (long term loans as compared to the value of the company), so I really don't think that would be an issue. A lot of people here seem to forget that Microsoft almost immediately dropped the price of the Xbox 6 months after launch when the PS2 price dropped. It's not outside the realm of possibility to see it happen.

dallas said: Yeah, people are buying the x-box left and right, so a price cut could go a looonnng way in sales....
I'd say people are buying a Wii left and right, when you consider x-box is no longer being recorded by NPD anymore I'm not sure about that. If you mean 360, when you consider the shortages last year and the current sales (230k, 240k?) I don't think they have actually managed to increase sales year over year. Yes I know they sold 160k last February, but as I said, supply constrained, what would it have sold otherwise?? In a few months we will see if they are increasing sales year over year or not. And this wasn't meant as a comparison thread, it's a discussion about a price drop for the PS3.

Allows for backward gaming, see they basically put the PS2 engine in the PS3 to allow backwards gaming. Now they are going with a software solution in which you will download firmware to your PS3 and it will allow you to play your games. 360 already does this, which is why not all Xbox games are playable. With the PS3 they have said at European launch around 1200 titles will be able to be emulated with the software solution and eventually all will be available.

I'm glad to hear that they are doing more for less. The japanese are going to rule the world someday ho ho.
Right. 1200 titles sounds like more than enough to satisfy almost everybody. I guess using software for the backward compatibility, instead of a chip would be cheaper and accomplish about 95% of the job,l which is good enough for me.

they will drop 100$ wgen they stop loosing money on ps3. that should be in spring 2008. 100% In USA ps3 is selling better then xbox360 for same period of time, and it cost 600$. http://www.vgcharts.org/aconscomps.php?name1=X360&name2=PS3&type=0&align=0 4 X360 Feb 06 187,250 1,117,000 PS3 Feb 07 133,750 1,160,500 In japan you get ps3 for 500$, and now it outsells xbox360 + with low shippements of wii, almost reached wii, 30k vs 40k for last week. and now in europe it will be selling for J425 = 850$ in UK, and other countrries for 600Eu = 800$. 1) I just mentioned this, FACT, Xbox price dropped 6 months after launch. No a price drop doesn't have to wait until the manufacturer decreases the parts cost. You think the original Xbox cost less than 200 dollars when they price dropped in May 2002? They were losing probably more money per console than Sony is now. 2) The 20GB in Japan is 420 dollars US, the 60GB is 600 dollars US. 3) We all know it's outselling 360 for the same time frame in US now, but as pointed out manny times that was due to 360 supply constraints. 4) I agree with you, for the price I think you get a lot, I think it's set at the right price, but it won't sell a lot if you price it to sell only to the people who can afford it.

No a price drop doesn't have to wait until the manufacturer decreases the parts cost.
Microsoft at that point probalby could at the afford the losses on the xbox at that time. But the significant drop in shares for Sony in the past, and it's drop in company value it is probably a wise choice to hold out on the price for the PS3 until parts are cheaper. At this point I don't think Sony wants to keep bleeding money for every PS3 they are making at this time.
