GT5P was announced at TGS07 with a release in Japan a mere two months later.  GTPSP was thought to be vaporware up until they suddenly reannounced the game with a release date pegged for three months later.

Polyphony always stays tight-lipped on what they're working on.  It is quite possible that they could announce a release date for GT5 2-3 months before release (making both GamesCom and TGS possible locations for such an announcement).

I didn't realise we'd been given a solid 2009 release date for MAG anyway.  PD did boast they had GT5 ready to go already but were still tweaking, so perhaps it's true. 

Not a solid one, but it was always pegged for 09. Atleast that's what I've been seeing. I'm going to rewatch both parts of that dev diary on PSN to see if they say anything about release dates.

Expect the release date to be revealed at TGS, also expect the release date of a Slimline/Pricecut for the exact same week.

I'm wondering if Sony is trying to capture sales in Japan with the PS3 Slim + Final Fantasy XIII and try to capture some massive sales in Europe + U.S. with PS3 Slim + Grand Turismo 5. If they dropped the price by at least 50 bucks, they would get some massive sales.

Umm no. The new ratchet game is coming in quarter 3, and no way is infamous gonna go platinum after a few months, infact they wouldn't even be thinking about platinum yet seing how it just got released.
