Forums - General - FIFA to no longer allow players to celebrate with religious shirts

I dont have a link for this, cause I read it in my paper and I dont know how many people here read Portuguese.

This started when Brazil won the Confederations Cup. A few players (mainly Kaka and Lucio) wore t-shirts (after the game was over) that said: "I belong to Jesus" and "I love Jesus".

After the entire braziliam team got down on their knees and prayed together.

Soon, the Danish delegation complained that they shouldnt've done that and that FIFA shouldnt allow religious statements like it doesnt allow political statements.

Now, I guess FIFA is going down this road.

Now, what is everyone's opinion on this?

MY OPINION - I think it's wrong. If we live in countries that respect people's right to freedom of religion and expression, every player should be allowed (after the game is over, obviously) to use whatever t-shirt they see fit.

Of course, limits have to be imposed. Nothing that offends a specific group, foul language, etc.

But if you look at what Kaka and Lucio wore they werent saying that other people belonged or should belong to Jesus. They were making personal statements. They didnt even like put the names of the Churches they believe in.

Now, what bother me is that if they had a shirt that said: "I love Lost", no one would have a problem.

Now, for the praying part, I also have no problem. If no one is being forced to do it and they dont turn it into a 30 minute session, it should be allowed as well.

So again I ask: What do you think?

Thats bullshit! let them pray!

I am the black sheep     "of course I'm crazy, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong."-Robert Anton Wilson

That's... retarded... but it's typical backwords thinking on the part of a lot of countries.

"We'll protect everyones rights by taking them away!"

Stupid.

Keeping religion seperate from secular events means that it isn't sponsored by it.  Not that you ban religious stuff.  Doing so is actually making religion an issue in it.

Yes. I dont want to go too off-topic, but it seems a trend this day to turn religion into something that you can only show at home and nowhere else.

As if simply displaying my faith offends people of different or no faith.

Bang on with that there. If it offends a minority is wont be allowed as people may think they are being discriminated against. Its not just in this instance but in many.

Im not religious in the slightest but i understand people have beliefs different to mine and i will respect those as long as they dont infringe on me. How anyone can be offended by someone wearing a shirt with I love Jesus on is beyond me. I certainly doubt atheists are oppose to this.

In away though praying to God to thank him could offend the opposition, If they have religious feelings then they might think well why did God make them win and not us, it does seem strange to me that anyone would really care about some people praying though. Although i doubt theres many more nations that have players more religious than Brazilians.

If people want to act like idiots, as long as they aren't harming others, they should be allowed. If a national soccer team wins a big match, as much as I am slightly disgusted by the act, I would be fine with it.

Depends if it appears they are trying to convert people. I hate it when people try to force there beliefs onto me or anyone else for that matter. I suppose because they are looked up to and idolised some could see it that way. Its football though, shouldn't really matter how they celebrate as long as they don't break any laws.

^ All religions are fascist as most if not all the holy books say along the lines that you should convert people, to help them live a better life. Superiority amongst their own religion.

Is there honestly a need for them to show that they love god and jesus and all that?

You have to be born a Hindu and therefore can't truly convert. I've never had a budhist or Sikh try to convert me. Its mainly Scientologists on Tottenham Court Road that try to convert me. I usually reply with a "Fuck Off!". I have had a few Christians try and fail miserably. Its mainly the Abrahamic religions that try to convert people, not so much the other ones.
