Forums - Sales - Wii Fit vs. PS3 gap less than 2 million!

@vaio : ok, then answer me just that but no need to threaten me because I disagree.

Ok so now about Wii + Wii Fit vs PS3...

I think it's a bit better seen that way, but still those are two really different things.

Wii Fit is still a software and a balance board, consumer target is still very casual, it's not a product really aimed at gamers... It's bought in two times too (Wii then Wii Fit), so the consumer doesn't see the real total price he paid, it helps.

Basically, I think the thing is everybody can use Wii Fit, it's useful both for me and my nephews, and my grandmother if she wasn't dead long ago.

On the other hand, core gamers are the main target of PS3, until now they don't have a big casual crowd compared to the Wii, and PS3 gaming is less 'useful' than Wii Fit. For example, older adults are more likely to be interested in Wii+ Wii Fit. It targets everybody.

Basically the consumer target is much much wider in the case of Wii + Wii Fit, I think it can better any pure gaming console sale on the long run, PS3 and 360... But it doesn't mean that much, and I doubt MS and Sony care that much about this particular sales gap.

It just makes them think 'Let's try to target the casual crowd TOO'. It's a huge market now.

First I want to clarify I haven´t threatened you in one of my responses and I wont.

That doesn´t change the cost of it even if in some ways the consumer doesnt see it immedietly.

Wiifit is both a game and a fitness tool so it will sell and is amed at  gamers and fitness minded people and people that wants to do both at the same time, you should try the snowboard game it´s fun as hell and will give you a hell of a workout especially if you play it as long as you do with regular games.

The problem with PS3 is exacly as you described it they locked themselves into the corner of the core gamers and threw away the casuals which they allready had in their pocket coming from last gen with PS2. Sony had everything in their own hand but threw it away just to focus on the core they relied to much on the brand name and the hope that both the core and casuals would buy because it was a playstation.

They continued to flirt with the core and dissed the rest of the market wich was a huge misstake.

The balance board wide range of appeal has the chance to outsell most consoles ever, will it do so I don´t know but if it is followed up with steady software all through this gen then it might rack up some extremly impressive numbers (in my opinion it allready has some impressive numbers I was expectin this kind of numbers but I thought it would reach 20M-30M over the course of the whole gen not this soon).

@Pineapple : Err yes you can still compare them, I was just explaining why it was logical sales were greater on Wii + Wii Fit :

Wii / Wii Fit Combo vs PS3 :
- useful software (fitness) vs not useful (pure game)
- casual crowd vs core gamer crowd
- everybody in the population vs mostly young male audience
- lower price vs higher price

Price you see is not the main reason. And you can't say only 51 M people can buy Wii Fit, we're talking about the Wii + Wii Fit combo now...

Price is still important when you analyze sales, it's the single most deciding factor that drives sales.

I agree about your sentence "The thought of Wii Fit outselling Ps3 is more of a fun fact than it is proof of anything." That was my point, but I understand the fact you pointed (first sowftare to beat competitor hardware console sales) is interesting. Thanks for that, I understand the point of the thread better now (no sarcasm at all).

@Vaio : Ok, I agree with what you said with Sony losing opportunities in the casual gaming market. Actually, that's why you see them about to release great casual things like Eyepet or the new motion control. MS has basically the same 'problem', they need to reach a more casual market. We'll see if things improve, but I guess on that side, Nintendo has too much distance now. At least for this gen.

Sony made some efforts in the past with Buzz Quizz, Eyetoy or Singstar, but it's true they didn't reach the wide target the Wii managed to reach. Motion control was the thing everybody except Nintendo didn't see, actually...

Thats not true.

Wiifit has games & fitness related games while PS3 has action games,FPS,RPG,puzzle ....... basicly every form of genre ever made and even the fitness one with the ddr games.

Casual crowd was in Sony´s corner untill they alienated them

The third reason makes no sense at all

price is 50$ difference not that much and therfore not as big factor as you make it out to be.

lastly yes it´s a fun fact and nothing more thats why its being brought up because its sales on a sales site.

Yes I agree with you there I think it too late now for them to catch up( sadly) but they have to keep going to build up momentum that can carry over onto the next gen and make their trademark more compatible with the casual crowd.

Well no, PS3 alone (400$) has no game at all, so it doesn't have FPS, RPG, puzzle... If you compare Wii + Wii Fit and PS3, don't make it with 20 games on PS3, otherwise the price alone says Wii wins...

About my third reason, I think it makes sense : look at grandmothers / grandfathers : how many could have a PS3 ? Nearly none. And there are many of them who got a Wii. Same thing with mothers at home. That's what I mean.

Casual crowd, those people (grandmothers / grandfathers / mothers at home...) they never were in Sony camp like you say, they mostly started 'gaming' with the Wii. Wii Fit is not really a game for them, it's a funny tool to stay fit.

You see, both can't really be compared, that's just not the same thing, not the same crowd.

And yeah, I think 50$ matter in this recession, but that's not the main reason why Wii Fit sells more, clearly... Look at what the price cut changed for MS last september. 360 went from being outsold every week by the PS3 to gain a comfortable lead, just because of a small price cut. So of course it matters a lot.

In a more genral way, when a game like Madworld (core game) is released on Wii, it doesn't sell at all, while it would probably sell millions on PS3 / 360. I'm not sure right now both crowds mix that well (Wii crowd vs PS3/360 crowd), but that would need a new thread, it's offtopic.

Well I thought we were talking about pontetiall games library there so sorry for that.

My point still stands as you only get one game with wiifit and you get atleast one or two games bundled with PS3.

There are more young people interested in gaming the old people even if the Wii gets them to gaming.

Madworld isnt that good of a game, it was fun as hell but it was short and it was in 3 colours with exagurated violence and those kind of games sell very low ammounts.

I will gladly admit that the Wii doesn´t sell 3rd party core games but I won´t untill the day there actually is a decent 3rd party core game released for the Wii or one of the bigname titles that arent on rails.

Wii Fit (With Wii Fit Plus) Will easily outsell PS3 this generation, because it is a simply genius product and Nintendo knew how to sell it.

Ok, I see we mostly agree...

Ok for Madworld not being so great.

And you're right PS3 should sell a bit more right now, I think the young people you talked about ARE interested in PS3, but they just can't buy it. I really think the PS3 price is the huge killer in this recession... And I'm not even sure they'll be able to cut it soon.

Lolcislaw is right too about marketing. We didn't talk about that but it's a big plus for nintendo, they sold it very well. As he said, one of the the main points too is inovation, Nintendo 'saw' motion control and balance board, their competition didn't.

Yes the marketing is a very interesting topic.

Thats where I am most suprised, I grew up with Nintendo had my first Nintendo game with Game&Watch in 1980 (I think) and when Sony came with PS and blew Nintendo out of the way I was so Impressed with their marketing.

I was hoping Nintendo would learn something from that and respond the gen after but then Sony stepped it up a bit and Nintendo didn´t seem to have learnt their marketing lesson they should have.

This gen I was expecting a fierce marketing battle between all three and I was happy Nintendo did their homework and excelled at it but then came Sony and I haven´t got a clue what happened there.

Their marketing was godawful and they seemed to have forgotten the skills they had from PS1 and PS2 era and I still can´t explain it today what has happened to Sony in the marketing department it´s just a mystery to me, The masters have become the grasshoper somehow.

If you or anyone else has an explanation I am more then glad to take part of it.
