Forums - Sales - Does anyone still believe in a major turnaround this gen?

And with a last gen console.

That deserves respect.

How about they stole the mass market from Sony and then bitch slapped the competition for good measure by creating a new market at the same time.

QFT.

Plus Wii isnt a last gen console. It just doesnt have the same level of graphics than PS360 (but not so far btw). Stop trolling.

I'm not trolling i'm using common jibes used against the wii to show how well it's doing.

I have a Wii and I don't think its just waggle, don't care about the graphics but do wish it had a decent scaler and punch out was everything I hoped.

Don't call me a troll.

Thast's more opinionated than anything, we don't know if something done on PS3, is or isn't possible on 360. We just have to see games mirror each other (between the exclusives) to know for sure. I see many of your points though.

Dude, unless they say specifically how some critical aspect of the game cannot be done on one console or the other in absolute terms you cannot take such comments at face value.

Game A uses 490MB of ram on the Xbox 360.

Developer: It cannot run on the PS3. (Secret reason due to OS requirements)

Reality: The game developer could cut down a couple of things to save ram.

Example: Vines in Call of Duty World at War not present in the PS3 version

Game B uses relies on the Cell heavily for verticies.

Developer: It cannot run on the Xbox 360 (Secret reason the models are too complex)

Reality: The game developer could lean on the tessellation unit in the Xbox 360

Example: (Not any that im aware of as of yet as its only recently had the tools developed)

Game C uses 17GB of space

Developer: Cannot be made on the Xbox 360 (Secret reason is it uses too much space for audio and cannot be spanned over multiple discs)

Reality: The developer could cut the sound down to 5.1 and compress using a lossier codec which most people wouldn't notice.

Example: Dozens of games out there are this way.

The statement may be litterally true and misleading at the same time. Unless they say something which is both absolutely critical for the game and cannot be done on Xbox 360 its a lie by omission. A game which cannot stand up with lower quality visuals isn't really a game worth buying anyway if you take the visual degradation route.

We're hitting a point where developers have been working on the PS3 and XBox 360 for nearly 5 years and nothing has been shown for either console which is dramatically better than what the other console can produce; and the few games that people would claim give the PS3 "The Edge" are almost all games with such insane budgets that it is questionable whether they can turn a profit at all. If given enough time and money to tweak every model, texture and effect in a game to eliminate waste you can get any system (including the Wii) to do some amazing things, but it is (generally speaking) not a practical approach to game development and few developers would ever try it.

Now, from a technical perspective the PS3 will not stand up well against a next generation console ... Consider that today a (roughly) $100 graphics card, the ATi Radeon HD 4770, plays the same games as the PS3 and XBox 360 at twice the frame rate at a higher resolution with higher polygonal/texture detail, more complicated shaders, and with better AA and AF. Two years from now it is likely that a $100 graphic card will produce images with similar per-pixel detail at 1080p@60fps as the PS3 and XBox 360 could do at 480p@30fps, and a $100 graphics card represents graphics hardware which would be less expensive than what was in the PS3 or XBox 360 at launch.

tesselation its a directX 11 feature, even it was downported, it's relatively new and games won't use it til later,  and it only makes easier to do high polygons characters.

well santa monica its making 20k kratos without it (i think unless they have their own tesselation software because i am sure defered rendering isn't), and that was in the development stage still.

and for space 17gb to fit on 7.5gb dual layer DVD cutting sound to 5.1  its sometimes not enough, remenber some games are fully voice and titles like RPG or PAL titles require to have more than one language into them.

there is certain charm into blu ray since you only could do one version and put all the voice acting and music into it, since 360 installation it's not really installation you can rely on install certain languages only.

and even so Dual layer DVDS of the 360 have even less space,   you still will need more than 1 disc.

I disagree!

Console development moves in cycles, you can tell which cycle we're in by the number of releases in a franchise made by the same developer in a generation. As the console development cycle moves forward the performance of the consoles are extracted and the games are made in a more efficient way to do more with less, essentially the smoke and mirrors that good developers use to fool the eye.

Cycle 1: Development on unfamiliar hardware, even development without knowing exactly what the console will look like. Say Gears of War, Halo 3, Call of Duty 2. This development starts before the generation begins.

Cycle 2: Development on familiar hardware. The developers can essentially extract the full measure of readily available performance from the console. We're mainly in this cycle at present given that we're seeing a lot of games with 2 in their titles.

Cycle 3: Basic development becomes 'easy' as the developers are not experienced with the hardware. This means that they can extract performance from the quirks of the hardware, the Xbox 360 tessellation unit, the PS3s Cell processor etc. We won't be fully into this cycle until next year and we won't see the full fruit of it until 2010/2011. Once this cycle is over then the major improvements in game engines have been made.

Btw that $100 RV740 has the same die size as the Xenos GPU in the Xbox 360. IIRC it has something like 3* the number of more efficient shader units and far more texturing performance and memory bandwidth (55GB/S vs 22GB/S)

Tease.

tesselation ability was built into the specifically made GPU and CPU it's just no-one has used it yet.
The 360 has the ability without the need for DX11.

The new game engine MS has sent out with the new dev kits finally allows it to be used.

It's not watered down as they havent seen what a pc can do and decided to try and recreate it on the 360.
It's a feature of the 360.

No, its a GPU feature. It even works in Open GL. Games are starting to use it now, since the tools and drivers have only recently been released to developers.

Turn 10 has a 1,000,000 polygon car or two to show off.

English? Im sure they can manage to release titles in every country which cater to the native tongue.

The business people are quite equiped at dealing with different versions. Its what they are there for.

I don't care if it needs more than one disc, why should I?
